No Jazz update????

Looks like a pretty decent off season for the flyers.
We got two MUCH needed guards, a small forward and two big guys
With that said, does that mean Jazz Gardner Is now a non priority?
I'm probably in the minority and nothing can be done but I wish Amzil could've stayed.
I still see how he came in mid season, started and played well for us.
Anywhoo, maybe Gardner is waiting to see what Deuce will do before committing.
Go Flyers.

This Week

Good Morning,

Sitting at the Columbus Airport getting ready to fly out with my wife to her magical place, Disney World, for the week. We are celebrating our 15th wedding anniversary this week! Hard to believe that it was 15 years ago I was sitting on the runway getting ready to take off for Mexico with my new bride while she had the patience and understanding as I wrote an article about Rob Lowery committing to Brian Gregory’s Flyers. Maybe it was a good thing to set that precedent because she learned how important and passionate I was about covering the Dayton program. I appreciate her patience with me for the last 15 years as she’s seen me drop what I’m doing and heard me say “Dayton just got a commitment, I need to write” or “Sorry, I need to write a War Room.”

We left the kids at home this week while their Mimi watches them. If there’s anything breaking, I’ll try to post about it. I haven’t seen anything official, but hopefully no news is good news with Deuce. I’ve been told news should be coming out this week about the new assistant coach and there may be some shifting of titles/responsibilities within the coaching staff. I would expect an experienced hire here as there’s pressure on AG to win and make the tournament next year, especially if Deuce does return. I’ll let you know if I get any other info to pass along.

Thank you everyone, have a great week!

Roster management

The Premier league teams can teach a lot to other sports.

Brighton in this case. While in the premier league, a mid major.
Understands with money flowing all around, transfers are inevitable. Accepts that. Prepares for it with list of replacements (coaching staff, players).

In the case of college basketball, transfer portal and NIL is here to stay. The days of the three/four year player are gone.
Better have a continuous plan for roster management. Need to coach the current team while constantly evaluating future alternatives.

Transfer up, transfer down?

The advent of the Portal/NIL era of college sports has me wondering if UD will benefit more from players stepping up in level of competition, or those stepping down from a Power 5 conference. Does UD have better success with players coming form either direction? Who was the best coming from either direction that you can recall? I think UD has to find guys from both side of the fence, and this is now a much more critical portion of the recruiting landscape.

Here's my top 3 lists from memory of the past 25 years or so.

Stepping down:

1 - Toumani Camara
2 - Darnell Hoskins
3 - Jordan Sibert

Stepping up:

1 - Josh Cunningham
2 - Charles Cooke
3 - Kevin Dillard

The War Room (03/23/2023)

Welcome to the 2nd installment of The War Room for the 2023 offseason! As always, I'll begin this session with the ground rules for those that may be new. Everything that is reported in The War Room must stay in The War Room. Sometimes the info is sensitive enough that it simply doesn't need to be passed on beyond the doors of this message board thread.

This is a special feature for our subscribers only. The reason why it is posted on the premium board is because that's the only way to ensure that the info stays exclusive to Dayton Flyer fans. Thanks for your cooperation.

Without further ado, here it is.... The 2nd edition of the War Room for 2023!

NO DJOK!

Dayton has been known for their international flavor and they’re going all the way for Serbia, the home of Novak Djokovic, for their latest target. Vaiilije Erceg is a 6-10, 230-pound power forward/center out of Novi Sad, Serbia. He played for the U19 Junior League this past year, averaging around 18 points, 13 rebounds, and three blocks for Vojvodina. He shot nearly 57% from the floor and around 40% from three-point range.

Reviewing video highlights of him, he possesses a beautiful shooting stroke. He’s a very skilled big with good movement and can score at all three levels.

He told me that he met with the Dayton coaches via a Zoom meeting a few days ago and mentioned that he had a second one today. He told me he has heard from around 20 schools so far and would be considered a 2023 high school recruit.

Erceg also told me he is about a week away from a decision and believes he has all the necessary information from the schools recruiting him and is ready to get down to business in deciding. Here’s one of the videos I watched that showcases a lot of his abilities: Login to view embedded media
READY FOR A DUAL

Since Ed Cooley left for Georgetown, Providence commitment Garwey Dual has reopened his recruitment. Unofficially, I believe Dayton was his second choice when he committed to PC. To no surprise, Dayton is involved again this time around.

Dual told Rivals analyst Travis Graf that he has heard from Butler, Dayton, DePaul, LSU, NC State, Texas, Texas A&M, and Western Kentucky. St. John’s has reportedly got involved too. I think he’s going to have a lot of strong suitors fighting for him, but I was told the staff is ready to go to “war” with other programs to try and land him. He also told Graf that he plans to make one or two visits prior to the Nike Hoops Summit and Dual told me he is currently working on setting up visits to Dayton and St. John’s.

From Dayton’s side, It seems like there may be a tag team with Ricardo Greer and James Kane going on for Dual’s services with Coach Kane taking the lead on this one. Sources tell FlyerHoops that they have already conducted at least one meeting with him since his decommitment.

Those close to Dual tell me they weren’t happy with the way things went down with Coach Cooley and that they’d be surprised if he even considered Georgetown because of it. PC new head coach Kim English will likely try to keep him so it could come down to Dayton, St. John’s, Providence, and maybe one or two others before he plans on signing in the middle of April. I'd say the fact that St. John's and Dayton are two visits he's working on is a good sign for those two programs.

FRONTCOURT

Here’s the latest I am hearing on Deuce and Toumani. Of course, Dayton would love to have them both back next season. As I reported earlier, they believe they have the NIL money for those two that would allow them to come back for another year and make it a tough decision with their other options.

My sources are telling me Toumani is leaning towards going professional and put the chances of him returning under 50%. Even if he declares for the NBA Draft for a second time, which I believe is a strong possibility, it doesn’t mean it takes his chances of returning to 0%. While it may decrease those chances, there are certain scenarios where he could possibly still return in a Dayton uniform.

Lets move on to Deuce. DaRon and his entire family love and adore Anthony Grant. My expectations at this point are one of two things: he puts his name in the NBA Draft, goes through all the workouts and gets feedback. If he gets a first round grade, I would put the odds above 50% that he would leave. If he doesn’t, I would expect him to return to Dayton and work hard on his body this summer. Those are the two scenarios I’ve been led to believe he is preparing for.

With that being said, it only takes one team to fall in love with him and say they’re going to call his name during the first round. Selfishly, I think he would benefit greatly from another year at Dayton. They’ve done a tremendous job with him and he should have been the A10 Player of the Year this year. He needs to get stronger so when he goes up against those strong, physical centers from the power five conferences that he’s in the non-conference and hopefully next year’s NCAA tournament, he can hold his own.

There’s not two guys that love Anthony Grant more than these two. I’d love to see all three of them back another year, but AG will always tell them what’s in their best interest just like when he told Obi Toppin it was time to go. Expect both to get feedback before ultimately making their decision.

ACTIVITY

I think with the addition of Mustapha Amzil to the Transfer Portal, Dayton will be looking to fill at least five scholarships this spring between the portal and late 2023 high school kids (Update, Richard jumped in after I wrote this so it is now officially five). Obviously there needs to be an emphasis on the frontcourt in case DaRon and/or Toumani don’t return in the fall, and you also need some scoring and depth in your backcourt.

A guy that Dayton is reportedly heavily involved with is Enoch Cheeks from Robert Morris. He told me last week that Ricardo Greer was leading up his recruitment from Dayton. He’s originally from Providence, Rhode Island, so I would expect English and possibly Archie Miller to both be involved as well.

East Carolina’s Javon Small is another guard they recruited out of high school that has hit the portal. He’s a Midwestern kid (South Bend) that averaged 15.8 points and 5.6 this past season for the Pirates. He's already heard from several high major programs.

Another guy that Dayton recruited hard out of high school that could fill some frontcourt needs is Payton Sparks from Ball State. He put up some impressive numbers for the Cardinals and has heard from the ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Big XII, SEC, and others. He will be a hot commodity after averaging 13 and 9, while shooting nearly 60% from the floor.

Clemson’s Ben Middlebrooks and Indiana’s Logan Duncomb are two names to keep an eye on just because there is familiarity with them out of high school. I have not heard or seen anything directly connecting them to Dayton this time around, but would not be surprised if there’s some dialogue.

Of course, I already mentioned Dual is working on setting up a visit. I’m hearing that Dayton could host their first official visitor as soon as this weekend now that the players are back on campus following Spring Break. My guess would be it would be from this pool of candidates above. Stay tuned as we get more clarity on that!

CLOSING

That does it for this edition of the War Room. NIL is a big topic these days and I have a Zoom setup on Monday to discuss the NIL impact on the transfer portal and recruiting in general. Thank you to all of you! You all are what makes this board so special and the best place to talk Dayton basketball all year round! And a special welcome to the newbies that just joined the board. Until next time, We Are…

Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL)

I don't want to fan any fires but it Neil Sullivan just sent the following letter about how the recent executive order effects the Flyers and figured this will become an ongoing story that deserves thoughtful comments. Also looks like there are oppertunities for some of you if you want to provides support to some of our team members.

Dear Flyer Fans, Partners, and Community,

This is an important time for college sports, perhaps once in a generation, with significant issues ranging from broad legalization of sports gambling to the "transfer portal" to the recent Supreme Court ruling against the NCAA in an antitrust case. Many of these issues will evolve over the coming months with an impact on the University of Dayton and its student-athletes.

I write to you today specifically about the name, image, and likeness (NIL) compensation of student-athletes.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine signed an Executive Order on Monday, June 28, permitting college student-athletes to begin to receive compensation from third parties (but not from their home institution) for use of their name, image and likeness in endorsements or business activities without jeopardizing their NCAA eligibility. Foundational prohibitions on “pay-for-play” and recruiting inducements remain.

A full copy of the Executive Order can be found at this link.

The nuance and complexity of all NIL regulations prevent me from describing them fully, but in short, student-athletes may receive compensation for commercial endorsements, advertisements, personal appearances, autographs, camps/clinics and a variety of other business opportunities, provided the NIL activity is consistent with applicable law, including the Executive Order. There are some parameters outlined in the Executive Order, which largely tracks legislation that nearly passed the Ohio legislature last week.

For example, the Executive Order requires disclosure and institutional review of proposed NIL contracts. There are some potential areas of conflict with certain categories outlined, such as controlled substances, marijuana products, alcoholic products, tobacco, vapor products, gambling, etc. In addition, student-athletes may not enter into contracts providing compensation to the student-athlete for use of their NIL during official team
activities (games, practices, meetings, etc.). Their NIL endeavors are separate from organized team functions. Further, a student’s proposed NIL contract should not be in conflict with a provision of a contract to which the
University is a party.

Our coaches, staff and/or contractors will not broker deals for student-athletes or make financial promises to prospects in the recruiting process. Student-athlete business activities to earn outside income are managed independently from the University with their own representatives. University of Dayton or Dayton Flyer athletics-related marks and logos cannot be used, including all aspects of the uniform, unless such rights have been secured from the University through a written agreement.

However, we can and will provide educational programming to our students on NIL and associated regulations, including how they can provide value to the greater Dayton business community, in their hometowns and beyond. We must ensure the University of Dayton serves as a strong public relations platform for student-athletes to engage in NIL activity should they choose to do so.

If your organization, business or nonprofit can benefit from collaborating with University of Dayton student-athletes, please consider them in legitimate and fair market-based ways. We will and must ensure our students
have lawful opportunities in Dayton comparable to any other community.

While many of these changes appropriately modernize rules and intend to provide fundamental fairness for student-athletes, unintended consequences will result. We know some institutions and unscrupulous fans may create sham opportunities for students with inflated market values or ‘no show’ work, and include impermissible booster activity and recruiting inducements. As a community, we aim to comply with all NCAA, conference, state, and federal regulations related to NIL or any other area. Together, through legal, transparent and permissible means, we can aggressively support our students in marketing themselves. I believe our strong and loyal fan base, along with our market position, is advantageous relative to many other areas of the country, and my hope is that they display the highest ethics in that regard too.

The market reaction to these new laws and regulations remains a great unknown over the coming weeks and months. What is known is that we must face the new realities of college sports with appropriately balanced aggressiveness, or we will fall behind in a hypercompetitive environment. We must continue to make the Flyers a destination program for athletes across the country and the world.

While the University will not broker or serve as matchmaker with third parties, you may contact Krystal Warren at kwarren2@udayton.edu for general questions related to evolving NCAA policy or the Executive Order.

As always, we thank you for your loyal support of Dayton athletics and know that you expect first-class, competitive programs that represent our University, our city and our community in the best possible way. Together, that’s what we expect to continue delivering.

Go Flyers!

(OT) Bourbon Thread

Loved the idea of a Bourbon Thread. If one already has been made, please delete.

I was in Kentucky this weekend. Came home with a bottle of Eagle Trace and Henry McKenna. Had the opportunity to buy a white label Weller, but didn’t want to drop $625. Hell, I don’t like paying more than $60 for any bottle.

Anyone find any good bourbon lately?
