Rhode Island Thread (2/27/2016)

Liked this quote from Bill Koch's article on the game:

Using its recent string of NCAA Tournament appearances, elite facilities and one of the best home atmospheres in all of college basketball as powerful recruiting tools, Dayton (22-5, 12-3) has built a roster capable of withstanding its own injury issues.

cannot remember the last time I turned a game off with 8 to go. They have not played good since they were ranked. Reading their own clippings

if they lose this game, I think they played themselves out of the NCAA tourney. just my opinion.
Never thought I would type this, but that's a distinct possibility. If you can't be competitive at home against a terrible RI team, tough to see where you win another game.

All year ... All year there needed to be pressure and a 1-3-1 .... Really bad job

All year... Would have helped the freshman and helped the offense when stalled...

announcers just said they think dayton is ok position getting in. hope they are right.

The (bad) beats go on ... Makes you wonder how the Flyers won at St. Louis? Tuesday's game at mediocre Richmond, a venue where I can't remember the last time Dayton won, ought to be a barrel of fun.

Announcers always try to boost the team's they are covering with false praise. Unless this ship gets turned around quickly, Dayton isn't in "OK position." Eye test, last 10 games, you name it, the Flyers are failing right now.

Given the current state of the Flyers, chances of winning last two have dropped considerably, Should GW lose one, they trail VCU by 4 with 7 to go, we get the double bye. May not make a whole lot of difference though as we currently are playing poorly. May Dance as a 10 or so seed, but here again, probably a one and done. Things sure turned to crap in a hurry.

Anyone who has followed the flyers for over 60 years saw a meltdown coming. There are issues more than just not shooting well. The team has not brought energy to the game the last 10 games. This is the season in reverse from a couple years ago when we started 1-5 and Archie turned the team around for an unbelievable finish. We are headed for a 1-5 finish and a bubble watch or possibly a NIT team. Never seen a flyers team quit on one another like this one has.

Rumors are swirling that there is infighting within the #trueteam, true or not one thing is though, they are not playing as a #trueteam..

Got blasted on UDPride in pm's and emails with some of the ugliest and cruelest remarks for pointing out the flaws I saw. It is obvious some don't want to read anything but positive posts regarding the flyers. I say give them kudos when they deserve it and tell lit like it is when they don't, like today.

Don't see a good finish to this years team. Too bad, so promising. Did they quit, mail it in, or get caught up in the clippings and 15/13 ranking.

Teams have figured us out. Play us physical from the start and we will fall apart. We are SOFT! I have never seen a team who shoots LAYUPS this poorly. On top of that, we can't shoot from the outside, continue to miss our assignments on defense, and don't know what we are running on offense. Two times in a row we had no clue what out of bounds play we were running. Our offense is just pass it around the 3 point line. So easy to defend.

There's definitely chemistry problems right now as there's no offensive flow. . You play at home in front of 13,000 plus fans and let an understaffed Rhode Island team run off to an 11-0 start in a game we never had the lead and let a bench warmer averaging a point a game score 15 points and never missed a shot. That guy managed to stay in the game but our big man Steve can't stay in the game with all his fouling.Man three losses at home including back to back conference losses and this is supposedly our best team in years. Another game giving up 70+ points which is death for this team. With GW losing today we get a bye in the tournament though the way we're playing don't know how much that helps.Obviously we'll not go very far in the dance slumming around like we have. Only the players know what's going on with their games and only they can get back on the right track. We've had back to back sellout crowds that couldn't will this team to wins and with a game at a place we seldom win at even when we have a good team so the backs are against the wall.

Berry finished with 15 points. Steve finished with 3 fouls. Let him at least foul out. Don't think it would have mattered in the end,

No need to play Steve with how great Wehrli (and everyone else) was guarding him.

Great coach stops the bleeding ... We are about to see in the next two weeks just how good Archie is... Moment of truth for him and he team... I think he does it!!!

Too late. Should have never happened. Should have already been stopped.

I'm with you. As long as KP comes back healthy and shakes off the rust. He missed a ton of easy shots today. It's all mental with this team.

I have faith in AM and this coaching staff.

Incredibly cautious optimism at this point. They played horrible for about 32 minutes. There are so many "ifs" that individual players need to do and the team as a whole but I believe there is still a window of opportunity for them to get it together in time for the NCAA Tourney.

honestly that run at the end pissed me off to no end. FINALLY, we started playing like we gave a damn with only what, 4min left? Totally inexcusable. You can see Archie on the sidelines completely beside himself because there's nothing he can do. It's up to the players to actually execute and play with passion.

I think it was around the 5 minute mark coming out of a timeout and the play is one on one ball by Pierre that comes up empty. that was the best Archie could draw up so no I don't think he can do it. He has lost control of these guys. Case in point is how much certain players bitch and moan on the floor when something doesn't go their way and Archie says nothing to stop it so that says its okay to continue to act like a child. Team is unmotivated from the start giving them zero chance of winning. This all falls on Archie.

As bad as everyone else is why not? Look at how much time he logged, zero points, maybe 2 rebounds, he has position on on a rebound and the guy goes right over the top and tips it in. Put a freshman in and you might get better production and defense. The last 6-7 games we don't come out ready to play and get down by double digits, what is up with that, are we reading our press clippings. Sam Miller must have said something after being yanked in the last game, because for as much of the floor he sees, it amazes me that he actually started 3 games in a row. Something is wrong here and Arch said it in the after the game show, that he is puzzled. Defense was our forte and now we are getting our collective a$@# kicked. We are down 18 to a badly nicked up team and we walk the ball up the court and pass and pass and pass, extra passes are nice, but we are passing up wide open shots to take worse ones or force the shot. Are we trying to play ourselves out of the dance?

Soft is an understatement. If I was Archie I would load everyone up on a bus and take them to the feminine hygiene isle of the CVS. Try and make a statement.

I am sure the guys read their clippings, or at least the ones they want to. Case in point, the media announcers aren't helping the cause when they begin making excuses for the flyers and go on and state "I wouldn't want to be in Dayton's bracket when the NCAA starts, coaches will say NO not the flyers..." So the guys were ranked 13/15 and were told they were a lock into the NCAA and they laid back and laid egg after egg. While chemistry issues has raised its ugly head they have bought into all the hype that they could be a final 4 team and a team no one wants to face in their bracket.

Funny on UDPride someone actually is blaming Sam Miller for UD's woe's stating Sam is acting like a child etc. Sam isn't the one on the floor running a stagnet offense with zero energy on the O and D sides of the court. Some say it is the junior class as they are all in a funk, but do point to Schoochie as the main culprit. While Archie is a great coach this is probably new territory for him to deal with and since Schoochie is the main point guard leaves him little options at running the O.

Take the training wheels off Archie, and takle this problem even if it means sitting a starter or two. I'd rather see less experienced players going balls to the wall and lose than watch the experienced players slack off and lose.

A starter or two? I'd bench the entire starting lineup. They don't seem to care and they aren't prepared to play games.
Thats the way I see it too. Yesterdays game pissed me off and I'm usually pretty level headed. Archie needs to make a statement and do it in a big way.

What would make these players who a few days ago were 15th in the AP 21-3 overall and 11-1 in the A ten with first place all to ourselves all of a sudden decide they're just going to go through the motions and start back biting each other?. What do we have here another Staten cancer spreading through the team ? I can't believe we make it right to the finish line and spit the bit. Anyone watching that game yesterday can see something all of a sudden is totally off. When you let a Rhode Island team that's missing a number of their key players run out to an 11 point lead in the first three minutes You know the players heads aren't into it.Even when we cut it to four we never could get any stops to allow us to get a lead.Obviously the most embarrassing part was allowing the player who averaged less than two minutes and one point to go off on us for 15 points almost what he had for the entire year. How is Archie going to explain this season away if we somehow miss the NCAA's which seemed impossible to imagine two weeks ago especially while we're in the midst of a nine game winning streak and getting ranked. I'd say if there's bad blood break out the gloves and let them go at it, if not get over it and start acting like men. This is making the by line True Team seem untrue as this isn't the way our team from last year went about their business.I wondered how Archie would manage all these new players and up until the last two or three games he's managed to hold things together. This funk they're in has to be solved or we'll be in trouble selection Sunday

Resume wise, if we lose the next three games, Monmouth drops out and Vandy & Alabama don't get in the top 50, we may end up in a very similar situation as last year. It would take a celestial alignment and us continuing poor play but it is possible. I am more afraid of a clunker first round exit at this point.
