The Comeback vs. Nevada

Still sort of processing the insane comeback the Flyers had on Thursday and I'm trying to put it in some historical perspective. I watched it at a sports bar, and the fans there certainly seemed to appreciate the unlikelihood of it. I went home and watched the recorded replay of it, and was somewhat disappointed that the announcers were not more animated during the broadcast. (Or i guess that we didn't have more animated announcers. Those guys do a good job, but they are not exactly Gus Johnson).

Anyway, I was trying to find some info on the all-time NCAA tourney comebacks. It says we are ranked 5th in a tie. But to me, that doesn't do it justice. Because it's not just that we came back from 17. It's that we did it in the last 7 minutes.

  • 1. 2012 first round: BYU 78, Iona 72 (25 points)
  • T-2. 2001 Final Four: Duke 95, Maryland 84 (22 points)
  • T-2. 2018 second round: Nevada 75, Cincinnati 73 (22 points)
  • 4. 2005 Elite Eight: Louisville 93, West Virginia 85 (20 points)
  • T-5. 2024 first round: Dayton 63, Nevada 50 (17 points)
  • T-5. 2015 First Four: Ole Miss 94, BYU 90 (17 points)
  • T-5. 2006 Sweet 16: UCLA 73, Gonzaga 71 (17 points)
When you go back and look up these bigger comebacks in NCAA history, they all were in much better shape at the 7 minute mark than we were.

2012: BYU was down by 25 in the first half. But they had already tied the game with 10 minutes left.
2001: Duke was down 22 in the first half but had cut it to 11 by half time
2018: Nevada was down only 9 with 8 minutes to go.
2005: Louisville was down 20 but had cut it to 13 by halftime.
2015: Ole Miss was only down 2 with 8 min to go
2006: This one is the closest to our insane comeback. UCLA was down 13 with 8 to go, ending Adam Morrison's career and leaving him stunned and in tears.

So when it comes to miraculous comebacks, in my opinion, this one is all time. Just an insanely impossible achievement by this team.

I already have a few questions

I realize that an off-season thread has been started, but I have few questions which might be closer in nature.

A day later and as we head into the off-season and building the 2024-25 squad, here are my questions.

What can we expect from Jaiun Simon and Marvel Allen? What has the staff seen from them in practices? That answer will say a lot as to what Dayton will be looking for in the transfer portal.

Unlike previous seasons, will the Dayton squad (less DaRon and Zimi) stay in tact? It is a very connected group. Would be a shame to lose anyone. Post season meetings with each player should start happening later this week into next.

There will be a few coaching moves. Does the domino effect of those coaching hires affect the Dayton staff? The next 10 days into the NABC convention at the Final Four, there will be a lot of activity.

And a comment
With many NIL comments, Dayton can’t be happy with a NIL level that is at the top of the A10. Need to shoot for a level that is comparative to top Big East.

Now time to work on my transfer portal shopping list. Coming up.

Flyer Franchise

We should be very proud this am about the 7 seed in the NCAA and the huge door that has swung open for UD.
Dayton Has become a National school. lol our performance may lag and some would say has not been as good as it should be, but last nite is shows the respect the NCAA has for UD.
This post is about opportunity and money.
The Big East is in mourning today, bitter etc and probably they have a case. There lack of aggressiveness around expansion and there 20 Game round robin got them no where.
so Dayton with some nice wins but loses in the first round of the A 10 collects a 7 seed, the BIG East who claims the Dayton TV Market is not big enough watches St John’s with Pitino and Seton Hall stay home… the NYC TV market.
Take a look at the NCAA bracket and the Maui Classic next year!1 ESPN wanted Dayton to join perhaps the best field in the history of any preseason event….no Big East Teams.
this week the nation will hear more about Dayton and how our Basketball fans support the program during the First Four.
your about to see to The portal that we can compete with Anyone with Nil, ie Holmes come back this year.
The Big East got a huge wake-up call last nite. Time for UD to cash in.

Bracketology Watch

A place to share bracketologies as they get posted. Or post your own. Please don't post Jerry Palm or Joe Lunardi except to make fun of them.

My own as of this morning 3/6, with first round sites for one through four seeds:

1 Purdue Indianapolis (Detroit region)
2 UConn Brooklyn (Boston region)
3 Houston Memphis (Dallas region)
4 Arizona Salt Lake City (LA region)
5 Tennessee Charlotte
6 UNC Charlotte
7 Marquette Indianapolis
8 Kansas Omaha
9 Baylor Memphis
10 Iowa State Omaha
11 Duke Brooklyn
12 Creighton Pittsburgh
13 Auburn Pittsburgh
14 Alabama Salt Lake City
15 Illinois Spokane
16 Kentucky Spokane
17 BYU
18 Clemson
19 South Carolina
20 San Diego State
21 Dayton
22 Washington State
23 Utah State
24 Wisconsin
25 Florida
26 Saint Mary's
27 Gonzaga
28 Boise State

A perfect s-curve (it never happens) would pod top 6 seed Dayton up with lowest 3 seed Creighton in Pittsburgh. The winner would go to the regional in Los Angeles. First round opponent would be the winner of the First Four game between St. John's and New Mexico.

This close to Selection Sunday, I feel like the top twelve teams are mostly set (the teams, not the order). I don't look for much movement in or out of the top twelve.

The 13 through 28 lines (four through seven seeds) are a lot more fluid. It feels like I've got BYU, Florida, and Baylor too low. Auburn, Alabama, and Dayton may be a little too high.

2024 Atlantic 10 Tournament

Curious as to what you all think going into the VCU game and tourney next week...

Just did some calculations and here's my prediction:

1. Richmond 16-2
2. Loyola 15-3
3. Dayton 14-4
4. Bona 11-7 (owns tiebreakers with Umass and VCU)
5. UMass 11-7 (owns tiebreaker over VCU)
6. VCU 11-7
7. Duquesne 10-8
8. SJU 9-9 (or 10-8)
9. Mason 8-10
10. Fordham 7-11
11. LaSalle 6-12
12. URI 5-13 (tiebreaker over Davidson)
13. Davidson 5-13
14. SLU 4-14
15. GW 3-15

If that becomes reality, Dayton would have the winner of the VCU vs. LaSalle/SLU game on Thursday at 7:30pm.

If Davidson beats Loyola (Loyola would have to lose both for Dayton to move into 2nd), Davidson would become the 11 seed and we'd play the winner of the VCU vs. Davidson/SLU game.

If we lose to VCU Friday, we remain the 3 seed, VCU goes up to the 4 line (and the other side of the bracket), and we would play UMass instead.

Idk who I'd rather play. UMass was pretty good against us at home but we led most of the game and got lazy at the end. I still think we'd handle them pretty well. VCU has owned Dayton (3-7 last 10) AND has a great following in Brooklyn.

Ranking Updates

I figure we could use a dedicated thread to track and discuss national rankings.

San Deigo State (29 to 22), Kentucky, (26 to 23) and UNC (25 to 20) made jumps that caused us to slip.
