Xavier thread (11/29/2015)

I have no idea or will I spend my time looking but Kendall is operating as Dyshawn and Dyshawn would've been a lot more productive. Too many stupid turnovers and missed free throws in the 1st half. The loss won't hurt us we need to figure out some things but that really can't happen until Dyshawn returns.

Now I understand why I should never take a look at this kinda' thread in the middle of a game!

Our kids aren't playing that well, our freshman are 6 games into there college careers and our sophomores are six games into year two, but we are 5-0 and playing the championship game of the tournament that had the likes of Iowa, ND, Wichita State, etc as participants!

All this without our only senior and arguably on some levels our best player! We got THE win we all said we had to have against Iowa plus an additional solid win on Friday night!

X doesn't "have" our number------whatever that means & still don't understand what satisfaction some fans get from ripping our players up and down, often the same players over and over during the course of a game on a site like this!

Relax folks it's a long season and we've had a very solid start to it!

Anyone who would've said they "expected" to win the tournament before it began would have had to be lying!

Screw X...........

LOL...I agree SCREW X...BUT I DON'T WANT TO RELAX...NO excuse for mailing it in like we have against X...I'm am furious at the lack of effort and stupid plays..like KP getting the fout out by the 10 second line when there was NO REASON AT ALL for his action..dunb dumb dumb ...the game was full of dumb..

Dosen't help with the flow either when u have crapy refs . We would have had a better game if the refs didn't take over in the first half.

Bottomline X is a better team than us at this point in the season. Come March the freshman will be better and Pierre will be back. Hopefully Darrell gets out of his slump by then. We need his shooting.

We have a long way to go. No excuse for some of the things we are doing and no exam use for the way Archie is subbing. How Mikesell sits the bench while Darrell plays is beyond me.

Xavier is really good and they are playing really well right now. UD is 5 and 1 and isn't playing well. If Dyshawn comes back, we'll see better offense and defense. The freshmen aren't good enough right now to have more than one on the floor at a time. Darrell needs to play through this funk. All this being said Xavier could be the best team that UD plays all year, including in the post season.

Darrell needs to sit on the bench. He brings nothing. He can't shoot and he is a horrible defender.

Refs had nothing to do with this. -14 on rebounds and -9 on TOs does it. We never had rhythm on offense because they dictated the game.

The whole team played bad. Everyone had plenty of mistakes and we didn't play as a team. We are missing a leader like Siebert and Oliver. Who is the glue guy?

I bleed red and blue but this was the most pathetic example of basketball I have ever witnessed. We were schooled at every position during this game. Constantly beaten by the dribble penetration. No rebounding. The only thing we excelled in were turnovers. There was not one bright spot for us in this game except when the buzzer sounded. For those that think that one player will make a difference when or if he comes back is sadly mistaken. x is heads and shoulders above our team and if we think it will be any different in March if these two teams play again are sadly mistaken. When I saw how x's freshman Sumner played, none of our freshman are close. I only hope I am mistaken and hope we get another shot for redemption but we are not even close to x at this point.

DD played bad... He's clearly in a slump. To say he should ride the bench is ridiculous. Mikesell and a few others looked equally bad. He hasn't had a great game either since the opener (DD had 15 pts and 8 rbs that day). It's important we get DD out of his funk quick because we will need him as the season goes on.

I'm guessing Archi sees something in Mikesell that is preventing him from playing more. I trust Archi will play the right guys and recover from this game.

We are 5-1, with our only loss to a clear top 15 team. We will be fine

If the NCAA wants games to have more "flow" and have more semblance to the " League" then the refs need to swallow the whistle rather than blow it more often. These ticky-tack BS "fouls" don't get called at the next level. That's why there is more offense and flow in the NBA, FEWER whistles. Probably should be I another thread but that's my 2 cents. And I really have nothing positive to say about this game.

Going into todays game, Mikesell was a +42 and Darrell was a +2. Mikesell was shooting 60% (53.3%) and Darrell was shooting 36.4% (25.0%). Yes, we need Darrell, but if he isn't going to bring anything, he needs to be playing less while Mikesell plays more.

My two bits:
Nobody can stop Pollard once in the paint but doesn't seem to have the sense when to drive- really misses DP.
DD has a head problem and can't match up well with a strong guard.
Changed my mind - don't think Kyle should play PG. Telegraphed two passes right in front of my row.
Will catch grief for this one: not certain
Miller ready for D1 ball. Soft, can't jump, and his hands are suspect.
Finally, we are about to find out if Archie is really, really good because he has a coaching challenge on his hands.

We lost one player from last years tournament team. Archie will get the loose ends tightened up. Yes it was an embarrassing way to lose but take it as a learning experience. Everyone on this team are talented. Everyone will get better.

I agree, but this game showed there is a gap in talent/size. We need to up our recruiting.

We need Darrell, but right now, he shouldn't be getting the minutes he is. Others are playing better. Just because we have more players this year doesn't mean we should play them all.

We have many new faces and we are 5-1. Dayton is a bunch of talented players that aren't a team yet. We don't have the chemistry and team feel yet. When we get it, this team will be great. We are a work in progress. Absolutely no reason to panic.

Dyshawn makes a huge difference in this game, he is way better in the low block sets than Kendall because of his size and ball skills. With the way they are calling the game Dyshawn will be spending a lot of time at the line. Our (stealing a tennis term) unforced errors and missed free throws in the first half were huge in the momentum of this game. Our rotation will completely change once DP returns . And that's not to take anything away from X, they have maybe the best team I've ever seen in recent years. Good mix of size, speed and shooters.

Well, this is the best Xavier team I have seen. They look like a team that has everything going on in the early part of the season, which is rare for most college basketball teams.

This was a real disaster. There really wasn't anything we did well. Turnovers, no rebounding, poor shooting, not getting back on D, not covering the 3 point shooter, and we could go on an on. This was the worst ass whooping I can remember in a long time.

It's just one game, and the whole team should be humbled by this poor performance. Hopefully the guys will listen to the coaches, hone in, and make improvements. We didn't play good team basketball in any aspect of the game. Let's not bash any of the players, because they all played bad.

The coaches need to make some decisions also in my opinion. The players need to begin to figure out their roles on both ends of the floor and work to become consistent at those roles.

Our record is fine, and we have a few good wins. Horrible performance today, but the good news is we can and will get a whole lot better. Overall, we have held our own in the first part of the season, and hopefully Deshawn will be coming back. He would make a big difference on both ends and on the boards, and provide more stability.

Xavier made us look very bad. It was a total meltdown. It hurts. Hopefully, our guys will renew their focus, recommit to the team fundamentals and toughen up.

Agree... Been a long time since we didn't compete. Really Good Xavier team. I have complete faith in Archie and he will make them better but we clearly have problems. The freshman other then X are poor on defense and not ready for a big time team. Film is out and we will see teams play zone and look to pound is inside and get KP and Steve in trouble. I said before the season this is an Nit team without Pierre and with the tough schedule and improved conference even with Archie Magic Pierre is key. I know he hates it but this group also needs to have a second defense to go to. That was a layup line tonite and our defense was not good all weekend. My biggest concern was how intimidated the Frosh looked... Summers was not. Overall good weekend but let's not just say it will be alright the TOs and lack of inside game are Major issues.... Come home DP!!

I doubt that the back door lay up drill would have happened (as often) if Pierre was playing. Last year the offense ran through Dyshawn. He is so good at the high post. This is why Darrell looks lost IMO.

Ron ... fire, aim, ready.

Xavier is a mature and experienced team. It's only one game. They are also very good.

Our 6'11 center disappeared the three games in Florida scoring 4 points and grabbing 13 boards total including playing 6 minutes today and fouling out. Last two games he's scored 0 points. Charles also was a no show with 5 points and getting out rebounded by Scoochie. I've seen X a couple of times and I was afraid of their big men on the boards and it came to pass outrebounding us by 14 and by nine on the offensive side. We never even got up 50 shots because of 22 turnovers. Haven't seen this kind of crap since Arkansas last year and thought Vanderbilt might put a hurting on us, not X.Problem with this game is even the veteran players looked really overmatched and in fact had most of the turnovers. Don't know what Archie can do to put a positive spin on any of this as even if we'd hit our season average in points we'd still have lost by almost 15 as X scored almost 30 points over our defensive average of 61 points so far this year.Reality hit the freshmen right in the face, now we see how quickly they recover.

For those who think Darrell shouldn't be sitting, why? I just don't get how people can want him to contintue to get 20 minutes when he is playing so poorly. He is shooting 32.4% (20.8%). That isn't a SHOOTING guard. Kyle and Darrell, our 2 SG's, are a combined 7-34 from 3. I guess I just don't understanding rewarding poor play with playing time. I am not saying he stinks. I am not saying he can't be better. I just don't think we should be giving him so many minutes when we have other options. Mikesell is shooting 50% from 3. He needs more playing time. If he doesn't play well, then go to someone else (even back to Darrell), but give him a chance.

Baby D will start shooting better. 6 games is too small of a sample size. He has improved his ball handeling and drives. His shot will come back.

Not a lot of positives to take from this one. Couple of quick notes. Archie broke a clipboard in half during one of the first half timeouts. He was displeased.

Scoochie tried to keep everyone together out there - talking, encouraging guys, trying to get everyone clapping for each other and whatnot. Counts for something.

I'm a huge Charles Cooke fan and he has come up big for us already this year, but he looked totally lost out there today. He'll get better, but he wasn't good on either side of the ball.

JP Macura, though he was recruited hard by Archie, is a total douche. He was talking trash to the bench, to the other players, to some of the fans behind the bench... Pretty unnecessary, and unprovoked. I'm glad he's not a Flyer. It's too bad a coach lets a guy act like that. Surely this comes across as sour grapes after an ass-kicking, but he's a jerk.

Final thought: it's one game, we won two good games here, and in March, nobody will care whether we lost by 2 or 29.

It is NOT JUST one game ...it is an embarrassment by our biggest enemy and I very much care if it was by 29....lol..Not trying to argue with you ....I just think sometimes we should not try to ignore a bad situation...I am CONFIDENT AM won't look at this as just one game...even if he is pc and says its no big deal...IT IS to me...lol...I do understand we must move past this ...learn from it and even forget it when we play again ...but I hope they always remember this every time they practice...
PS I now know how fans for TTUN feels after OSU punked them ...lol

What i saw tonight was so disappointing and distressing. Disappointing because i feel like that effort set the program back to about 5 years ago (if not 20 years ago in the Jim O'Brien days). And distressing because it looks like our flyers have lost their identity. Gone were the quick, crisp passes and ball reversals. Each guy caught the ball, then stared at the guy he wanted to throw it to for upwards of 3 seconds, then tried to force it to him anyway. This happened over and over and over. Last year's team moved the ball. I mean really moved the ball. They passed it with zip the instant they got it. They moved without the ball. They reversed it when there was nothing there. Our offense was absolutely pathetic (and playing against the zone is definitely a big part of it...but it was awful all around tonight). And i think it contributed to our defensive effort, which looked like a rec league game. On every possession i saw 3 to 4 guys not blocking out. I saw 2 or three guys routinely losing site of the ball on defense on every possession. There was no heart. I don't think we got a second chance point until the final seconds of the game. That is sickening.

I wonder if AM should try to get the groove back by playing small again. Let's have cooke play the role of DP and play the four spot. Let other teams matchup with us. Get kendall back to the 5 and let him be the mismatch. Last year's situation of no big men was a true blessing to this team. I think right now we're plugging in guys because that's traditionally where they should go. Last year's team we played 5 guys on a mission and they all had skills to be a threat to score. I think right now Steve isn't a threat, and it's taking away Kendall's ability to create down low.

There was so much wrong with this team today that it's hard for me to say it's just one game. To put forth that bad of an effort, against a rival in a championship game on espn is is just pathetic. I don't expect to win every game, but i do expect archie's teams to show up. That was an embarassment out there. The guy's need to take a long look in the mirror after that one.
