Welcome to the 7th installment of The War Room for 2019. As always, I'll begin this session with the ground rules for those that may be new. Everything that is reported in The War Room must stay in The War Room. Sometimes the info is sensitive enough that it simply doesn't need to be passed on beyond the doors of this message board thread.
This is a special feature for our subscribers only. The reason why it is posted on the premium board is because that's the only way to ensure that the info stays exclusive to Dayton Flyer fans. Thanks for your cooperation.
Without further ado, here it is.... The 7th edition of the War Room for 2019!
CUE THE OFFICIALS
It’s officially a new school year and that means a couple of things. The season is right around the corner and recruiting picks up as the early signing period is right after that. Next weekend tips off Dayton’s official visit schedule and begins with a pair of recruits.
Christian Fussell is a three-star center from Decatur, Georgia. He currently holds 21 offers including ACC in-state team Georgia Tech. He really made waves at the Georgia Top 100 Camp at the end of June and offers started pouring in. His ability to knockdown perimeter shots on offense and protect the rim on defense makes him a rare prospect.
According to Shun Williams, he has visits lined up at Dayton (8/29), VCU (9/5), MTSU (9/12), FGCU (9/19), and Charlotte (9/27). He’ll have another player taking an official visit to campus next weekend when he visits.
Already committed guard Luke Frazier will take the trip to UD. There was talk about whether or not he would visit when fellow guard Eric Gaines makes his visit or maybe someone else, but Frazier told FlyerHoops it will be next weekend and he is extremely excited about it.
OH(IO) CANADA!
The other guy that was mentioned as a possibility of joining Eric Gaines on his official visit was Canadian power forward Keon Ambrose-Hylton. That also will not happen, but according to a source, he will make an official visit the weekend prior to Gaines on September 6th.
Ambrose exploded this summer after playing in the FIBA and in the EYBL in July. He picked up five major offers in the month of August alone. Dayton was one of the first two schools to offer, both coming in 2018.
The forward goes to school in Ohio so he is very familiar with UD. He attended a game last season, unofficially. Anthony Grant and Anthony Solomon have been tag-teaming on this recruitment so you can see how high of a priority he is on their recruiting board.
So if you’re keeping track at home, it will be Fussell and Frazier, Ambrose, and then Gaines in three consecutive weekends. Ambrose has long been their top target at the four and Dayton is hoping he will commit during his visit.
ANOTHER BRONX BOMBER
The last time the Flyers were able to secure a commitment from the Bronx, Scoochie Smith went on to lead his teammates to the winningest class in school history. The Flyers are eyeing that burrough again as they’ve ramped up their recruiting of shooting guard Koby Brea.
Like Ambrose, Koby Brea represented his country (Dominican Republic) in a FIBA event this summer. Having Ricardo Greer on his staff allows Anthony Grant and Dayton to be involved in some of the top targets that DR has to offer.
In the FIBA Centrobasket Championships in San Juan, Brea averaged 9.2 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.8 assists in five games. His best game came against eventual champion, Mexico, in Group Phase. Brea scored 15 points, went 7-10 from the floor to go with five rebounds, three steals, and two assists.
The Flyers hosted multiple juniors for official visits last season in the first year of the new rules. Brea could be the first junior to get an official visit this season.
GENESEO GEM
Earlier this week, I gave you an update on how the conversation went between Isaiah Rivera and the Dayton coaching staff. I wanted to take an opportunity in the WR to express my opinion on Rivera’s recruitment by Dayton.
To me, this has a very similar feel to how Devin Oliver’s recruitment went coming out of Kalamazoo Central. I definitely feel like Dayton thinks highly of Rivera, but seems to be trying to secure commitments from guys at other positions first.
If you’ll remember, the Flyers were holding a scholarship, trying to convince Adreian Payne to stay home and go to UD. Ultimately, he chose Michigan State. That opened up the opportunity to offer Devin Oliver, who shortly thereafter committed to Dayton and went on to lead the Flyers to the Elite Eight in his senior season.
The Flyers might want to see how this plays out with Fussell, Ambrose, and maybe a guy like Tony Sanders before bringing Rivera back for his second official visit. I don’t think they have the luxury they did with DMO because Colorado State is heavy on Rivera so they’ll have to get this figured out in the next few weeks while they keep Rivera warm.
CLOSING
That does it for this edition of the War Room! I wanted to give a formal welcome to the new subscribers and a hearty thank you to all of you loyal, long time subscribers. All of You are what makes this site so special, all year round. I’m actually hoping all of you don’t read this until Monday morning and are taking in the Gem City Shine. I’ve seen pictures and it brought a big smile to my face! #DaytonStrong. Until next time… WE ARE…
