Welcome to the 7th installment of The War Room for the off-season of 2017. As always, I'll begin this session with the ground rules for those that may be new. Everything that is reported in The War Room must stay in The War Room. Sometimes the info is sensitive enough that it simply doesn't need to be passed on beyond the doors of this message board thread.

This is a special feature for our subscribers only. The reason why it is posted on the premium board is because that's the only way to ensure that the info stays exclusive to Dayton Flyer fans. Thanks for your cooperation.

Without further ado, here it is.... The 7th edition of the War Room for the 2017 off-season!

BAD NEWS

Well, let’s get the bad news out of the way first. Dwayne Cohill was supposed to be taking an unofficial visit with his mother this Sunday to the University of Dayton.

The 2018 point guard from Holy Name informed FlyerHoops that he had to cancel this weekend’s visit to UD. “My mom had something pop up so I had to cancel,” he said. “I’m looking for a different day though.”

Those that have been a part of this site for a long time have heard this story before. But Cohill insists that he is really looking forward to the visit and that Dayton is one of the top schools recruiting him the hardest.

Unofficial visits are prohibited in July for unsigned prospects so the window is closing on when Cohill would be able to make a visit if they want to do so before the July evaluations begin. They would have to wait until August 1st before he would be able to visit the campus if they don’t have him on campus before a week from tomorrow.

GOOD NEWS

Obviously, a lot of good news came out of Upper Arlington this week. News broke on Wednesday that Dane Goodwin had already decommitted from Ohio State and was making visits. He made two official visits, one to Villanova and Notre Dame.

Those I spoke to said it was going to be an uphill battle for Dayton with Notre Dame seen as the perceived favorite. On Thursday, Robby Carmody committed to the Irish, which would likely eliminate the Irish from Goodwin’s list.

The timing couldn’t have been better. All this happened before Goodwin and Upper Arlington are scheduled to be at Dayton’s Team Camp this weekend. Sources told FlyerHoops that Goodwin’s family is set to meet with Anthony Grant first thing Saturday morning before the Golden Bears play.

Damon Goodwin, a former Dayton teammate of Grant, has been handling most of the talking with the media this week and he was very careful with his wording. “As of right now” and “to this point” were used in the same quote from Coach Goodwin to the Dayton Daily News. That’s because Saturday will be the first official meeting between Dane and Dayton. Then all those present tense terms can be thrown out the window. The news of his decommitment had been known at Dayton before it was public and the news of Robby Carmody’s commitment met the UD coaching staff with enthusiasm. The timing of all these happenings couldn't be any better for Dayton. Game on.

TEAM CAMP

There will be 40-plus high schools or prep schools on Dayton’s campus this weekend for the annual team camp. Three teams will be traveling from out of state, two from Illinois and one from Pennsylvania.

The complete list of schools include Alder, Beavercreek, Beechcroft, Bellbrook, Bethel, Carroll, Centerville, Chaminade Julienne, Cincinnati Hughes, Dublin Jerome, Franklin, Gahanna Lincoln, Kings, Lima Central Catholic, Mariemont, Mason, Maumee Valley, Greenfield McClain, Middletown, Moeller, Northland, Northridge Prep (IL), Olentangy Liberty, Perspectives Charter (IL), Pickerington Central, Ponitz, Princeton, Purcell Marian, Reynolds (PA), Sidney, Springboro, Springfield, Thurgood Marshall, Toledo St. John's, Troy, Upper Arlington, Versailles, Walnut Hills, Walnut Ridge, Wayne, Wheelersburg, and Xenia.

Upper Arlington will be here on Saturday and Sunday, while Versailles was added late for Sunday only. So Dane Goodwin and Justin Ahrens will play each other on Sunday in a showdown of former Ohio State 2018 commitments. Upper Arlington will also face Darius Bazley’s Princeton squad on Saturday. So if you’re keeping track at home, Dayton managed to get all three Ohio State 2018 decommitments to their camp this weekend.

Obviously other big names that will be there include Vincent Williams, Andre Gordon, Jeremiah Francis, Samari Curtis, Max Martz, Tanner Holden, Josh Corbin, along with those guys already mentioned. Remember the coaching staff put this together in just two short months. Impressive.

GOING INTO SEC COUNTRY

In what has become a theme for southern recruits, James Kane is all over it. I spoke with Carver (AL) guard Jaykwon Walton and he couldn’t say enough good things about Kane.

Walton, a 6-6 combo guard, averaged 13 points, six rebounds, four assists per game last season as a sophomore. He’s ranked 100th nationally in the Rivals150. He already holds offers from Georgia, Mississippi State, Texas A&M, TCU, and a few others.

He told me Kane called him at midnight the night that college coaches were allowed to start contacting 2019 recruits directly. He said Coach Kane was recruiting him while he was an assistant coach at Murray State previously.

Walton told FlyerHoops that the two of them discussed having him up for a visit and said he is looking forward to getting to know more about UD. It sounds like this staff will not be afraid to go down in SEC country and go head-to-head with those schools for some top talent. It’s an exciting time to cover Dayton recruiting.

CLOSING

That does it for this edition of the War Room. Reminder, what’s posted on the Red and Blue Forum should stay on this forum. Hoping tonight goes well with my project go live at my day job so I can be at Team Camp first thing in the morning. I will let you know on here first thing tomorrow.

As always, welcome to the new subscribers and thank you to those that this is not their first rodeo. You guys are ALL the reason why this is the best site for Dayton basketball, so thank you again!
