Welcome to the 4th installment of The War Room for the off-season of 2017. As always, I'll begin this session with the ground rules for those that may be new. Everything that is reported in The War Room must stay in The War Room. Sometimes the info is sensitive enough that it simply doesn't need to be passed on beyond the doors of this message board thread.
This is a special feature for our subscribers only. The reason why it is posted on the premium board is because that's the only way to ensure that the info stays exclusive to Dayton Flyer fans. Thanks for your cooperation.
Without further ado, here it is.... The 4th edition of the War Room for the 2017 off-season!
HE’S CRUTCH!
Dayton is in need of a point guard that can come in and make an impact right away. The past two weekends, they’ve watched Ridgeway (TN) point guard Jalen Crutcher first in the UAA circuit and then in the Adidas Series. Between both of those, Crutcher netted a UD offer.
He lit it up this past weekend in Atlanta and has a few power five schools now showing interest. It also gained him another offer from Florida Gulf Coast.
The Flyers are trying to lock him up now though. He will fly in on Thursday night for an official visit to Dayton’s campus. He hasn’t taken any visits since he received his release back on April 10th. He took official visits to Missouri State (who is still on his list) and Chattanooga in the fall.
I think the opportunity for a point guard at Dayton right now speaks for itself. The chance to come in from day one and play big minutes for an team that has made the NCAA tournament four years in a row is real. This would be a great late addition for Anthony Grant and would ease Flyer fans’ anxiety a bit.
SING IT FRANKIE
As I reported last week, Frankie Hughes was on campus at the end of last week. He arrived mid-afternoon on Thursday for an official visit to Dayton. He left early Friday evening and headed back home.
I talked with both his high school coach, Sonny Johnson, and Frankie and both of them commented about how great the visit was. In Coach Johnson’s words, Frankie had an “awesome visit.”
Wichita State and Minnesota are both trying to get Hughes to visit as well. He would have to sit out 2017-2018 and would have three years of eligibility remaining.
Hughes told me he was unsure what his next move would be and told me he’s not sure if he will take anymore visits. Sounds promising, but the more days pass without a commitment I think the chances of Dayton landing him go down. Of course, I said the same thing a couple years ago about Josh Cunningham and that worked out okay.
ARENA UPGRADES
It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything on the UD Arena upgrades that have been discussed for the past year and change. Most of the delay was caused by UD holding off until they secured the necessary funding to get started.
I’ve been told the funding is there now and the project is ready to get underway in the next 30-60 days. The official announcement should come sometime late next week from the University of Dayton.
From what I am told, this will be a three-year project with the timeline beginning in June. For the first year, most of the renovations that are going to happen are to the bones of UD Arena-- pipes and electrical part of the building.
Most of the improvements to the interior and facade will happen in years two and three. I’ve been told when complete, UD Arena will be glamorous and look brand new both inside and outside. Hopefully, the video that I’ve heard is spectacular will be released at the official announcement.
MAYE DAY
There were some calling for a May Day surprise on the board in the past week, but how about a Maye Day surprise? The Dayton Flyers are in on another 2017 point guard, Tyler Maye from Farmville, NC. He scored just under 37 points a game (not a typo!) last year as a senior and was the MVP of the State Championship as a junior.
His high school coach told me that Tyler is one of the most efficient players he’s ever coached, puts up big numbers and doesn’t take a lot of shots. Part of the reason why he’s being overlooked is because he decided not to play AAU last year and concentrate on getting better on his own.
He’s taken official visits to Western Carolina, Charlotte, and Nebraska already. The last two will likely be VCU and Dayton. He has prom on Saturday night, but VCU is trying to get him on an official starting on Sunday. Maye said Dayton is trying to get him to take an official on Tuesday, right after.
I think it’s a two horse race. The thing that I don’t like about this situation is he already took a visit to Nebraska and before he could decide anything with them, they received a commitment from Thomas Allen. He could feel some pressure to commit quickly after this weekend’s visit in fear of the ship sailing like it had done in Lincoln. Hopefully the huge minutes for a point guard at Dayton is enough to overcome that anxiety and take one more visit before deciding.
CLOSING
That does it for this edition of the War Room. Reminder, what’s posted on the Red and Blue Forum should stay on this forum. Let’s hope that by next Thursday, the Flyers have a 2017 point guard in the fold. As always, welcome to the new subscribers and thank you to those that this is not their first rodeo. You guys are ALL the reason why this is the best site for Dayton basketball, so thank you again!
