Welcome to the 11th installment of The War Room for 2017. As always, I'll begin this session with the ground rules for those that may be new. Everything that is reported in The War Room must stay in The War Room. Sometimes the info is sensitive enough that it simply doesn't need to be passed on beyond the doors of this message board thread.
This is a special feature for our subscribers only. The reason why it is posted on the premium board is because that's the only way to ensure that the info stays exclusive to Dayton Flyer fans. Thanks for your cooperation.
Without further ado, here it is.... The 11th edition of the War Room for 2017!
INK TO PAPER
As was tweeted out yesterday by Jacob Polacheck, Dwayne Cohill told me he will be signing today to become the first signed recruit for the 2018 class at the University of Dayton. He will be holding a larger ceremony next Tuesday to celebrate the signing.
Cohill will open up his season on December 2nd against East Tech. I am looking for a big year for Cohill, with the college pressure off, and will make a run at the highly-coveted Mr. Basketball award in Ohio.
Who will join him in 2018? I am told that Dayton will not just use a scholarship to use it. They’re being very meticulous about who they want to bring in to go with Cohill.
One guy to keep an eye on is Eastmoor Academy guard Taevion Kinsey. I’ve always thought of him as a MAC-level player, but he has improved a lot since the end of his junior season. He ran with Ohio Nova this past summer, where he netted some mid-major offers and and picked up some high-major interest. His trajectory and continued development could convert that high-major interest to high-major offers if he decides to sign in the spring.
BIG-TIME PROSPECT VISITING
The first big out of state visitor of the year will be in the house for the season opener on Friday. 2019 guard Kira Lewis will make the track from Alabama to visit Dayton and take in the game against Ball State.
The 6-4 guard is ranked 100th nationally by Rivals.com and rated a four-star prospect. Grant went into the state of Alabama is competing with in-state offers from Alabama and Auburn, along with out-of-state offers from the AAC, ACC, Big XII, and the SEC.
Lewis will be making the visit to Dayton with his mother. They’ve already made visits to both Alabama and Auburn recently and plan to also make a visit to LSU as well.
As a sophomore, Lewis averaged 21.6 points, 7.9 rebounds, 4.8 assists, and 3.1 steals per game in being named a finalist for Class 6A Player of the Year. Dayton will have their work cut out for them, but getting him up for a game with the renovated arena showcasing to him that UD is a high-major basketball program.
BIG MAN WILL TOO
The other guest for Friday’s game is another 2019 prospect, forward Ja’mier Fletcher. The 6-7, 230-pound big man is out of Pittsburgh and is attending First Love Christian Academy.
He averaged 19 points a game last year as a junior at Steel Valley and decided to transfer and reclassify to the prep school in Washington, Pa.
All five off his scholarship offers came between June and September. Central Connecticut State, Kent State, Morehead State, Robert Morris, and St. Francis (PA) have all extended him an offer for 2019.
Fletcher is more of a 4/5 type of player, doing most of his work around the rim. He long arms make and leaping ability make him a solid shot blocker and his strength and array of post moves allow the lefty to finish frequently at the rim. He’s very strong with a preference to get the ball on the block with his back to the basket or catch it at the elbow and use his long first step to get by his defender. With the reclassification, high major offers are in his future.
MILLER TIME AGAIN?
Now about the current team, or at least in this case, current team until last August. I’ve heard some rumblings lately that forward Sam Miller could return to the Dayton program in the very near future.
On August 11th, Miller announced in a press release through his attorney that he was suspended from UD for a semester and his scholarship revoked.
He’s been working out with his high school coach at Gonzaga, staying in shape in case he is able to return as early as late December. Miller, I’m told, is very remorseful for his actions and has gone through counseling to improve himself.
Miller and his family are adamant about him returning to Dayton even if that means paying for his tuition the remainder of his college career. That would be an interesting development if the Millers pay their own way to play at UD. Ultimately, I am told, it will be up to head coach Anthony Grant.
CLOSING
That does it for this edition of the War Room. Reminder, what’s posted on the Red and Blue Forum should stay on this forum. I think Friday is definitely going to be a challenge, but hopefully they put on a good show and get the W for the two recruits in attendance.
As always, welcome to the new subscribers and thank you to those that this is not their first rodeo. You guys are ALL the reason why this is the best site for Dayton basketball, so thank you again!
