Welcome to the 7th installment of The War Room for 2018. As always, I'll begin this session with the ground rules for those that may be new. Everything that is reported in The War Room must stay in The War Room. Sometimes the info is sensitive enough that it simply doesn't need to be passed on beyond the doors of this message board thread.

This is a special feature for our subscribers only. The reason why it is posted on the premium board is because that's the only way to ensure that the info stays exclusive to Dayton Flyer fans. Thanks for your cooperation.

Without further ado, here it is.... The 7th edition of the War Room for 2018!

IN THE BOOKS

Well, that’s another July Evaluation period in the books. As you can tell from the tweets of maps and everything associated with the last three weeks, the Dayton coaches have logged a lot of miles and had their eyes on a slew of kids.

From what I gather, they will likely sit down and have a decompression (if you will) and attack strategy meeting in the next 24-48 hours as a staff. Here, Coach Grant and his assistants will go through and identify the kids they want to pursue for 2019 and cross off the kids that they saw and will no longer invest any time in.

From there, they will try and line up some visits based on their noted priority. I do not believe any 2019 official visits are lined up as of yet, but that could have changed since the last time I checked in about it. They have multiple scholarships to offer for that class and do not have a commitment yet.

While they don’t have a commitment yet, they do have two transfers right now that will sit out and become eligible in the fall of 2019. With that being said, there could be some late additions to the 2018-2019 roster.

TRANSFER?

The Flyers already have Rodney Chatman Jr. (UTC) and Ibi Watson (Michigan) sitting out this season after choosing to transfer into Dayton. From what I am told, the Flyers very well could add one more transfer very soon.

It seems like this is a very, very sensitive topic to the coaching staff because I was told they did not want the news out there. Like sometimes they do, see Kai Jones, where they try to sneak a kid in for a visit under-the-radar without other college programs knowing and try to secure a commitment from him.

I was given a few clues to who it may be. I was told it would be a power five transfer so it would be someone from the ACC, Big Ten, Big XII, Pac 12, or SEC. I was also told that the player would have to sit out this season and have two years of eligibility remaining.

My own personal thoughts with the current makeup of the roster are that it would be a four or a five man. Donnie Jones even said to me in the interview how badly they needed a big man, but I assume he meant one for this season. Time will tell, but I was told they were hoping to bring him in quickly this week so hopefully we have some good news very soon. If they do secure a commitment, the scout team may be the best since Roger Brown’s freshman team.

HIGH PRIORITY

I already alluded to the fact that Dayton will likely prioritize their targets over the next couple of days, but a couple of guys stood out in their evaluations. Wing Forward Toumani Camara, I am told, made a very favorable impression on Anthony Grant.

Camara, who lives in Hollywood (FL) and attends Chaminade-Madonna Prep, stands 6-7 and weighs a little over 200 lbs. He has length as a wing forward, a nice left-handed set shot from the outside, and the ability to run the floor and finish. His versatility, ability to score, and high ceiling make him a very attractive prospect.

Right now, he’s just starting to realize some of his potential. He has enjoyed a solid couple of weeks with Team Knight on the AAU circuit. He picked up five new scholarship offers since this past Wednesday and 10 so far in July.

The Flyers were not the first A10 school to offer as GW beat them to the punch by two days, but the Flyers were the second of now seven A10 schools to put the offer on the table. Dayton offered him back at the end of April’s Evaluation. I would expect Dayton to try and secure a visit from him very soon.

TWO BIRDS, ONE STONE

Another priority target is Vermont Academy and New Rens guard, Tyler Bertram. The scoring machine originally from Cooperstown, New York, had Dayton in attendance for a lot of his games the past three weeks.

He currently holds 24 scholarship offers with the latest coming yesterday from former A10 member, Charlotte. The Flyers offered him a scholarship back in March and already had him on campus for an unofficial visit last month.

The intriguing part about him is Dayton is currently recruiting him for both 2018 and 2019. I was told before the July Evaluation began that there was a chance, most likely a slim chance, that he would see how his July went and reevaluate whether to remain in the 2019 class and attend Vermont Academy again in the fall, or head to college.

Dayton certainly has the room to bring him in still, but I am not sure it will happen. He’s never mentioned 2018 to me, only that he wanted to cut his list after July. I expect things to pick up rather quickly over the next couple of weeks. And that’s just talking about recruiting. I have also heard that the schedule should be getting released at some point this week. Buckle up!

CLOSING

That does it for this edition of the War Room! Thank you to everybody for the patience with me over the past couple of months during my family’s transition into a new house. Hoping that when school starts in two weeks, that everyone is back into a routine. A formal welcome to the new subscribers, quite a few in July, and thank you to all of you long-time, loyal subscribers! You guys are the reason this is the best place to talk Dayton hoops all year round! Until next time, WE ARE…..
