Welcome to the 2nd installment of The War Room for 2022! As always, I'll begin this session with the ground rules for those that may be new. Everything that is reported in The War Room must stay in The War Room. Sometimes the info is sensitive enough that it simply doesn't need to be passed on beyond the doors of this message board thread.
This is a special feature for our subscribers only. The reason why it is posted on the premium board is because that's the only way to ensure that the info stays exclusive to Dayton Flyer fans. Thanks for your cooperation.
Without further ado, here it is.... The 2nd edition of the War Room for 2022!
BLUEPRINT
Finally the news you all have been waiting for. I’m hearing that Dayton has gotten heavily involved with a someone currently in the transfer portal.
And get this, there’s already a blueprint laid out for this transfer! The Flyers have two scholarships available and things are heating up with Georgia transfer, Tyrone Baker.
Just like Toumani Camara, Baker was being recruited heavily by Dayton and Georgia before picking the Bulldogs. He played in just three games last season before breaking his right hand and missing the remainder of the season.
I’ve been told that this is moving very quickly and a visit to Dayton could happen as soon as this weekend. This would provide the depth inside behind Deuce this season and hopefully provide the type of anchor on the defensive end as a starter in two seasons if Deuce decides to leave for the League after next year.
Just like Camara, I have a strong feeling he should have came to UD in the first place, but decided to go for the bigger name, bigger conference. It’s about fit. Better late than never.
GIG EM… OUT
I think with the second scholarship, it’s obvious that they’ll target someone that can play both on and off the ball. The one name that stood out when all of the transfer portal announcements pop up was Texas A&M’s Hassan Diarra.
A New York native, Diarra ended up all the way in Aggie Land after Dayton recruited him hard out of high school. He appeared in all 40 games this season for A&M, averaging 6.2 points in a little more than 15 minutes per game.
I had him on Dayton’s Hot Board a couple of years ago and based on his comments during the recruiting process, the Flyers coaching staff were in constant contact with him. I would expect Ricardo Greer to be all over this one.
Dayton showed the blueprint (today’s theme!) that they could play with two point guards on the floor at the same time. Rodney Chatman and Jalen Crutcher were a thing of beauty, but I am just giddy at the thought of having two NYC point guards on the floor at the same time. Ultimately though, it will come down to can Dayton win out over some schools in the NE (home) for his services?
ROYAL BLUE
I’m happy to be able to report some good news to you, but unfortunately I am going to be the bearer of bad news in this report as well.
For those Devin Royal fans out there, it appears that Dayton may have been eliminated from
the Royal sweepstakes. According to a source close to Royal, he’s just feeling it more with a few other schools than UD right now.
I was really getting a good vibe about this one about a month or so ago, I’m not sure where things went the other way. I thought with the relationship Dayton has with his current coaches and the background, this seemed like a very natural match.
I’ll never say they’re 100% out until the kid publicly releases a list, I hear that Dayton stopped recruiting the kid, or he commits elsewhere. Neither of those three are true currently. With the fact that Pickerington Central is supposed to be one of the teams that is going to be attending Dayton’s Team Camp in June, they could get back in the race. AG shows him the love at that camp, you never know.
PORTALING
At the current time, it seems like the guys coming back are set. There’s still a week to enter the transfer portal, but I think the Dayton players have had plenty of time following their wrap-up meetings to enter by now.
With that being said, two did throw their hats back in the recruiting ring. Moulaye Sissoko, from what I am told, has made two visits to Northern Iowa and Florida Gulf Coast to date. Appalachian State is the third team that I hear a lot with his name and I’m thinking that they’re in the mix for a visit as well.
FGCU makes a lot of sense to me with the type of player he is, but I’ve also heard that he would like the freedom to wander outside the paint as well. In terms of fit, outside of his host family being in Iowa, I am not sure Northern Iowa is a good fit. Appalachian State really likes him, but I don’t think they want to be involved in a long, drawn out recruiting process. I could see them taking a commitment from someone else if he drags his feet too long.
The other former Flyers is, of course, Elijah Weaver. Ironically, Appalachian State is one of a few schools involved with him as well. Other schools mentioned are Georgia, UCF, and USF. I don’t think Georgia makes a lot of sense, but I’ve been wrong before. I would expect him to try for a waiver to become eligible, but even then, a smaller school, in a one bid league, makes a lot more sense seeing how the NCAA dragged out his eligibility here at Dayton to the start of the second semester. I think we’ll hear something on at least one of the two guys in the coming weeks.
