Grant's Press Conference

We will just have to agree to disagree. The goal should be to hire the best assistant coaches we can. If Ostrom is one of them, great. Grant will go get us great players. No one should be worried about that. We can't hire someone just to try to keep one or two signees. The program is bigger than one or two recruits. You are only hurting your long term success by not hiring the best assistant coaches you can.

Recruits won't have a ton of faith in Grant if he doesn't have good/respectable records in his first season or two. The word on the street will become that 'archie made dayton what it was'. The recruits won't care about the circumstances. Grant's best chance to fix that is to keep the PG who has blown up over the past year. I don't think we can afford to let the momentum slip. Ostrum has recruited khalid el-amin and joakim noah. It would be tough to top a guy like that in terms of recruiting at our level. Plus he's an old friend. Plus he has a great relationship with these kids. Plus he aids in the continuity and relationship with the current players. It's so odd to me how little faith and love you have for the members of archie's coaching staff.

It has to be good for both Anthony and Tom Ostrum and as long as they've known each other then hopefully they'll be forthright with each other. Ostrum has to know he was working from a deficit in trying to win the head coaching job from Anthony but if he can't mentally get by it then he needs to move on and by mentally get by it always be wondering what if I were in the first chair and he needs to be honest with himself and Anthony. If it were me & even if I knew winning the job over Anthony was a tall order I would have a hard time dealing with it and I would tell Anthony just that and tell Anthony at this time someone else is a better choice.

It has nothing to to with having little faith in Ostrom. I've even said I'm fine if he stays. All I am saying is he should stay because Grant thinks he is one of the best coaches he can get. Not because he is trying to keep a recruit.

How many cocaches from the previous staff did Purnell, BG, and Archie keep? I just find it interesting that so many think we have to keep Ostrom to be good.

All I'm saying is we should hire him for the right reasons.

Judging from Ostrum's high praise of him and his attendance at the press conference, i would think he's over it. If I were really bitter about not getting the gig, i would not be at the press conference.

Assume Ostrom goes to IU. I actually think not only bad form if they try to take recruits to IU, but potentially worse.

If the Minnesota article was correct (it later was modified) that Wright was told that he had a place at IU if he wanted it, some different possibilities exist. If Archie was still under contract at Dayton, you have breach of contract and fiduciary duty issue. If Archie was under a MOU or contract at Indiana, you have a recruiting violation. There could be other possibilities and again this assumes the article was correct. It is unlikely IMHO but not implausible that Wright created the story that he had a spot at IU if he wanted it.

Also when Archie was on the radio interview and asked about Wright, he pushed Dayton too much. I was reminded of a Shakespeare quote, doth protest too much (when you protest too much, it is probably true). My PURE SPECULATION (and I cannot emphasize enough this is speculation with no factual basis or evidence) is that Archie heard of the article, now is trying to backtrack, and will not offer Wright as he does not want to start his tenure at IU with a recruiting violation investigation.

But I also think that Wright and the Czech recruit will not be at Dayton next year (again pure speculation with no evidence) Hoping for 3/5 and would be happy with 2/5 staying.

Things I loved about Coach Grant's pressor.
He is placing no limitations on what this years team can accomplish.
The returning players have to step up into the vacated leadership roles.

Ostrum question, will he be back. haven't picked staff yet...coaches from all
over the country are calling and want to be apart of this. Pick the best.

He's learned alot from his previous college experiences. Awesome! Great coaches
learn from their failures as much as their successes.

What style will you play. Attacking. Fast or slow? Don't know. which way will win!!
As a coach he will have to play whichever style fits his current team's talent level.
As Archie's players begin to leave you recruit more to the way you want to play.
May not be a popular answer...but you don't try to fit a square peg in a round hole.
Example: on defense if your team is not a good man to man team you mix in some
zone. Play to your personal. Love Archie but he was going to play man come hell or
high water.

Thanks Coach, exactly what I wanted to hear.

I disagree. Grant has worked with a ton of coaches who he might want more than Ostrom. He also has former players who are now coaches. I'm not saying he doesn't want Ostrom. I'm just saying there are a lot more options. And that's before even considering other coaches who may want the job, but have no connections to UD or Grant.

Another point Ron, AG's can hire good AC's - four or five are or have been HC's. McKinley will be a good point guard, but there are grad transfers out there, you do what's best for the program. If Anthony can get a couple good players for next year we'll be ok.

I agree. You have to do what is best for your program and not what is best for next year. I'd love for Grant to have 2 to 4 scholarships in 2018 and 2019 to bring in his players.

By the way, haven't heard anything about Coach Grant's contract?
Length? Numbers? Anyone heard?

I just finished watching this interview for the third time. I LOVE me some coach Grant. His comment about the Red Scare and that big smile he gave was proof he loves being here. I hope the best for him and his family. It must be hard to all of a sudden have to take up roots and move to a new place on such short notice all the while having to make the current players happy, try to convince the incoming players to keep their commitments etc etc. I'm behind him all the way. I believe he will be our coach for a long long time. I'm ecstatic.

Wasn't a huge fan of the hire due to him leaving vcu for bama of all places. Then getting fired from bama. I thought he had a great presser and it definitely elevated my opinion of him. I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do.

None of the seniors and Cunningham was not there. Mostly everybody returning was there except Josh Cunningham, who is in Chicago right now.

1. Any reason in particular Bonsu was there but the other seniors were not?
2. What's Josh up to in Chicago? Is his ankle doing okay?

Shannon Miller is a very good writer. I knew I read some articles with her byline before, but wasn't sure where, so I looked her up on the university website:
