Talked to someone the other day who recently had lunch with our AD Neil Sullivan. He recounted a brief story to me that I enjoyed and I thought was worth passing along. This is paraphrased/summarized.

My guy said to Neil that he thought the men’s basktball team just had a great season, all things considered, with a bunch of newcomers, injuries, being shorthanded, etc.

Neil said no. It wasn’t a great season. Progress made, moving in the right direction, yes, but he expects conference championships and this team had a chance to win the A10 regular season and didn’t. They could/should have performed better in the A10 tournament and didn’t. He was not satisfied with the season. Third place in the conference and a one-and-done in the A10 and postseason is not good enough. It was not a great season.

I love that.

I read nonsense on the internet about UD and it’s fans “accepting mediocrity” which is a load of crap. Not really this site so much but elsewhere. To me, that phrase is nonsense. UD expects the men’s basketball team to win conference championships and advance in the postseason. Period. Less than that is not good enough.

I think we all understood this year had some challenges, it was year two of a big transition, a lot of turnover, etc. Did I expect us to make the NCAA before the season began? Nope; I thought if we were in the bubble discussion late in the year, that would be a pretty good result. But I’m pretty stoked to hear our AD interrupts and disagrees with a guy who tries to tell him he thought we had a great season, all things considered.

This isn’t the first time I’ve heard something like this said, which is why I roll my eyes when people talk about the athletic department accepting mediocrity and being okay with an NIT bid. The expectation is for us to compete for conference championships and advance in the postseason.

Go Flyers.
