At The RIM

I have for a few years been concerned about finishing at the rim for our Flyers. We seem to shy from contact and put up awkward shots and often do not get fouled or make the basket. The game with GW was another game where this was in evidence. I rewatched the game and offer the following data of Flyer shots within 3-4 feet of the basket;

  • Baskets made 15
  • Shots not made because of being fouled 6
  • Shots blocked 5
  • Shots that were missed without block or foul 21
  • TOTAL shots attempted within 3-4 feet 47
Our timing on these shots is so predictable. We rarely stop and fake. We rarely lean in for contact. We tend to put our head down then leap to avoid contact and take an awkward shot with little chance of success or being fouled.

I am interested in what others think about this and how we can improve. I know we do not have a Scootchie who could wiggle, alter timing, and go under and up while getting contact. I have seen opponent team take an approach of stopping and restarting to get to the rim to create contact and get the defender out of position to block or alter shots.

Thoughts? Ideas?
