The War Room #15 (7/8/2011)

Welcome to the 15th installment of The War Room for the off-season of 2011. As always, I'll begin this session with the ground rules for those that may be new. Everything that is reported in The War Room must stay in The War Room. Sometimes the info is sensitive enough that it simply doesn't need to be passed on beyond the doors of this message board thread.

This is a special feature for our subscribers only. The reason why it is posted on the premium board is because that's the only way to ensure that the info stays exclusive to Dayton Flyer fans. Thanks for your cooperation. Here it is, the 15th edition of The War Room for the 2011 off-season:

This is going to have a recruiting focus with it being evaluation month. So here we go...

Mo Schools for Molock
I traded some emails earlier in the week with the high school basketball coach at my alma mater, Dublin Coffman. The subject of the emails was of course former Purdue commitment Kyle Molock. The 2012 point guard decommitted not too long ago, and has heard from schools "from all levels of Division I" according to Coach Collins.

His AAU director said he received 30 calls the first day Kyle announced he reopened his recruitment. One of those schools is Dayton and they had a phone conversation with Kyle that "he enjoyed." Collins said that Kyle is better than he was prior to the injury and said his game is definitely more well rounded. He's a kid to keep an eye on, especially when the Flyers staff (and a lot of other coaching staffs for that matter) will be tracking his progress closely this month.

Doughboy Shooter
I want to retract a statement I made earlier this week as new information has risen to the surface. The last time I talked to Sherron Dorsey-Walker, he told me he hadn't heard from the new Dayton staff. I spoke with Sherron on Thursday and he told me that since our last talk, he has had "several" conversations with Dayton assistant coach Kevin Kuwik.

According to Sherron, Dayton's offer is still on the table and he is still very interested in the Flyers program. When the old staff was still here, Dorsey-Walker started a tight friendship with Alter guard and UD recruit Jaaron Simmons and the two have talked about playing together. Dorsey-Walker recently took a visit to Iowa State and they may be the leader at this point. It'll be interesting to see what transpires with him by this time next month.

Not Ritchie Valens' song
Allen Griffin was dispatched to Latvia to take in the Canadian U-19 team this week. His eyes were set on 6-4 wing Junior Lomomba. The 2012 three-star prospect from Madison (WI) Memorial High School has offers from Baylor, Cincinnati, Nevada, New Mexico State, and West Virginia.

Lomomba is originally from Montreal and he plays in the summer with The Family AAU. Dayton was one of four schools represented in Latvia, so they're really trying to make an impression on Lomomba.

Scott County Represent
I talked with Scott County guard Tamron Manning, who was heavily recruited by the old Dayton staff. Last week, Manning was called by the new coaching staff and he said the conversation went extremely well. They told him they were recruiting him as a point guard and liked him because of his size and versatility.

My guess from getting to know Tamron as well as I have is, if Dayton offers, he wouldn't take long to decide. The kid is absolutely in love with the school, the campus, and UD Arena. With the amount of scholarships they have to offer for 2012, he'd be a good kid to take a chance on. He's skilled, long, and really wants to be at UD.

This is for Murph
I traded some texts with Cleveland Benedictine's Mark Williams this week. The 6-8 power forward in the class of 2013 has an offer from the University of Dayton. He also has offers from Indiana, Northern Illinois, and Robert Morris.

He's running with the King James Shooting Stars and Dayton has been watching him this week in Indianapolis. He told me he hasn't had a chance to visit Dayton yet, but said he is making it a priority when he first has a chance to following the evaluation period.

That does it for this edition of the War Room. Thanks to everyone for your continued support and welcome to the new subscribers that joined since the last War Room. It's because of all of you that this is the #1 destination for FlyerHoops news all year round!

The War Room #14 (7/1/2011)

Welcome to the 14th installment of The War Room for the off-season of 2011.

Here it is, the 13th edition of The War Room for the 2011 off-season:

Tuesday's Open Gym
It didn't take Northland's Jalen Robinson long to get back to Dayton after his first visit on Sunday. 24 hours after his first time at UD, he committed to the Flyers and Archie Miller. 24 hours after that, he was back at UD Arena taking part in Tuesday's open gym.

Also at Tuesday's open gym was Moeller's 6-4 shooting guard Josh Davenport. A member of the class of 2013, Davenport averaged six points and four rebounds last year in 12.8 minutes per game for the Ohio powerhouse. Everyone I've talked to about Josh tells me the kid has a tremendous upside, but is still raw. He'll become a more focal point this season at Moeller, and you'll see some more schools on him after July. He plays with Ozie Davis' Queen City Prophets, the AAU team that produced former Flyers Norman Plummer and Chris Wright.

Out-of-State Visitor
On Wednesday, Jordan Dickerson from Brooklyn visited the Dayton campus. The 7-0 center was originally a 2011 class member at Abraham Lincoln High School in Brooklyn, New York, but has reclassified to the class of 2012. He'll attend IMG Academy this fall, where Dayton recruited Alex Gavrilovic out of this spring.

Dickerson is said to have an extremely high ceiling-- enough to attract attention from some Big East schools last year. Folks I've talked to said his defense and rebounding are ahead of his offensive game at this point. The Dayton staff liked enough of him to extend him a scholarship offer before he left campus a couple of days ago. They're going to follow him as close as anyone on their radar next month.

Terry Rozier
I spoke with Shaker Heights coach Danny Young on Wednesday about his point guard Terry Rozier. Rozier, who is good friends with recent commitment Jalen Robinson through AAU ball (All Ohio Red), is being recruited hard by the new Dayton staff. Several schools are on him hard, but only the in-state schools have extended scholarship offers so far.

The Flyers are one of four schools to offer along with Akron, Cleveland State, and Kent State. Boston College, Cincinnati, Florida State, Georgia, Illinois, Marshall, Miami (Fla), Tennessee, West Virginia, and Wichita State all recruiting him hard and will be watching during July. He has yet to visit the Dayton campus and with the dead period and evaluation period, he likely won't until August. Another prospect that Dayton's staff will be showing their love towards as they follow him around during the evaluation period.

2014 visitors
Dayton hosted a couple of 2014 prospects in Javon Bess and Jae'Sean Tate of Pickerington Central on Monday. Both players started as freshmen last season, Bess at point guard and Tate at power forward. Both players are very long already and terrific prospects. The Tigers were barely above .500 for the season, but with their youth, should be one of the top teams in Columbus in the coming years.

It seems like there are a lot of schools already interested in this duo. They both attended Michigan's Elite Camp in the middle of last month. They'll be traveling with the King James AAU program this month.

Flyght Wright
Just a quick update on what I am hearing regarding Chris. There are a couple of teams that have expressed a high interest in Chris and told him they'd like to bring him into their veteran camp-- if there is one this season. The most likely scenario I am hearing is he'll start out in the NBA Development League instead of going over to Europe this season. From what I was told by multiple people close to the situation, if the work stoppage gets situated and there is an NBA season, Chris has a really good shot to make an NBA roster. One team in particular needs/wants Chris and it sounds like he'll start with their development team while the lockout is going on. When I am able to release that team's name, I will.

That does it for this edition of the War Room, I want to thank everyone for their continued support and formally welcome the couple of people that have signed up in the past week. I think everyone on here will attest to the fact this is the place to feed your Flyer Hoops craze in all parts of their year. I want to also wish everyone a happy and safe 4th of July! Be careful this weekend and enjoy the time with loved ones. My wife and I are welcoming in our second child in two weeks, if not sooner. Very stressful, but exciting time in our lives! Thanks everyone!

The War Room #13 (6/22/2011)

Welcome to the 13th installment of The War Room for the off-season of 2011.

Here it is, the 13th edition of The War Room for the 2011 off-season:

Draft Night
Tomorrow night is the NBA Draft, and one draft expert told me Chris Wright's chances are 50-50 that he gets taken in the second round. To recap, he worked out for Golden State, Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia, New Jersey, Detroit, and Washington.

From what I am hearing, there were two teams that were really impressed by CW in his workouts. Golden State (44th pick) and Boston (55th pick). Now from what I'm told, Golden State is going back and forth on whether or not they like him enough to take him at that spot. Another draft expert told me Boston really likes him if he is available at 55 still, but "there's also a couple other guys they worked out for that pick that might be available." As one analyst told me, "Once you get into the last 12 picks or so, nobody can predict what will actually happen. Ryan Reid was drafted last year (laughter)." Time will tell, tomorrow night, 7:30 on ESPN.

A "Legacy" on Campus
Jamestown Greeneview 2013 forward Evan Bradds has been hearing from Dayton among other schools. He received calls last week from Akron, Albany, Boston College, Colgate, Davidson, Dayton, James Madkson, Kent State, Miami (Ohio), Northeastern, Notre Dame, St. Francis, Toledo, William & Mary, and Wright State. Akron, James Madison, Miami, and Toledo are the schools that have offered to this point.

The 6-6 Bradds came to two open gyms in the last couple of weeks at Dayton. His father David played for the Flyers from 1987-1991, under Don Donoher and Jim O'Brien. Evan's grandfather is the legendary Gary Bradds, who has his jersey hanging in the rafters at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus. Bradds will be a guy Dayton watches very closely next month as he travels with CBIZ.

Team Camp
This weekend is Dayton's Team Camp, and from what I'm told, they already had a bunch of local schools committed for the old staff and won't really put their own brand on it until next summer. Some of the better schools coming in include Chillicothe, Cincinnati Moeller, Middletown, and Northland.

Nothland is probably the top team at the event, with both Devon Scott (Cincinnati commitment) and Jalen Robinson. The new staff was recruiting both players, but Scott verballed to UC earlier this month. Chillicothe has 6-8 Malik London (2012) and Middletown has 6-3 Geovonie McKnight (2012). London has a chance to get back on the Dayton radar this weekend, but he was mostly recruited by the old coaching staff.

MAC school added
I've heard that the Buffalo Bulls have been added to the schedule. It was originally believed that Western Michigan was going to be added, but when that fell through, Buffalo (another MAC opponent) was worked out to come to UD Arena this season.

Buffalo finished 20-14 a year ago, and return a lot for this fall. Four of their five starters will be seniors next year, losing just second leading scorer Byron Mulkey. Leading scorer and three-point ace Zach Filzen (15.1 ppg) returns for his senior year. Six of their eight rotational guys return including freshman phenom Javon McCrea (11.8 points, 6.5 rebounds). With Akron, Miami, and Kent in their division, it'll be a challenge to win that crown, but this year will be as good of an opportunity as the Bulls have had.

Visitor News
Last, but not least, it was reported on Monday by Alex Kline that Huntington Prep transfer Ray Lee was visiting Dayton unofficially that day and then Louisville on Sunday. I can tell you I got a text last night from Ray that said that report was a mistake and he wouldn't be visiting Dayton until the end of the month. I'm working on confirming what date that will be, but he hasn't yet.

I can also tell you that Teddy Hawkins from Dayton Dunbar made an unofficial visit last Friday. The 2012 wing was recruited a lot by the old staff (had an offer), but seemed to be losing interest in Dayton towards the end of the Brian Gregory reign. It looks like the new staff is trying to get in the mix for his services, and will be evaluating him in July. I had heard they were going to try and get the local big three-- Hawkins, Jaaron Simmons, and Maverick Morgan on campus for unofficial visits before July, and they were able to do that now in a 48-hour window late last week.

That does it for this edition of the War Room. As always, I want to thank all of you for your loyalty to this forum and welcome those that have signed up since the last War Room. As you'll learn quickly, this is the place to be if you're a Dayton fan all year round!

The War Room #12 (6/17/11)

Welcome to the 12th installment of The War Room for the off-season of 2011. As always, I'll begin this session with the ground rules for those that may be new. Top Flyght
We're now officially less than a week away from the NBA Draft. As a Cavs fan, I'm very excited and hope they find a way to get both Kyrie Irving and Derrick Williams. Also, another big reason to be excited is the possibility of the first Dayton Flyers player to be drafted since 1990. Chris Wright had a busy week this week, working out for a total of four teams before it's all said and done.

Prior to this week, he had worked out for Golden State and Chicago. This week, he has/had workouts with Boston, Philadelphia, New Jersey, and Detroit. He has one more workout scheduled with Washington before the draft next Thursday. A few scouts I've talked to this week feel like he'll be a second round pick next week, and one I talked to said it's a 50-50 chance. It'd be great for the Dayton program and great for his family to hear his name called next Thursday.

Two Locals
As all of you are aware that read this board, Alter's Jaaron Simmons and Springboro's Maverick Morgan (both 2013) visited Dayton yesterday. Jaa visited in mid-morning, while Maverick came in the late afternoon. Maverick noted that he was on campus for almost three hours. Both guys came away impressed with what the new coaching staff had to say.

Here's what the two guys had to say:

Jaaron: "We talked a lot about getting a bond and knowing each other. The visit was actually really good... A lot of great changes."

Maverick: "The visit went great, and the new staff is great too. We talked a lot about how I would develop there and become a better player. We watched a lot of film on Derrick Williams."

"They said they were coming to watch me in July. I'm excited about being recruited by Dayton, it's such a great school."

Hawg transfer?
We know Glenn Bryant went to Eastern Michigan earlier this week, but another former Arkansas Razorback is now on the board. Former Hawg starting point guard Jeff Peterson graduated after four years and has one year of eligibility left and is transferring. From what I've gathered, it seems like there is some mutual interest between Dayton and him.

I spoke with Peterson this week and he told me right now he is concentrating on finishing a couple classes and then will sit down with his family afterward to discuss his transfer options. He originally transferred from Iowa after his sophomore year, transferred to Arkansas-- sat out a year and played a year before graduating. This past year, he averaged 6.3 points in starting 23 games, dishing out 70 assists to 53 turnovers. As a sophomore at Iowa, he was a double figure scorer (10.6 ppg) and dished out 4.2 assists in starting 25 games before sitting out the remainder of the season with a hamstring injury. He would likely come in and push Kevin Dillard for the starting spot, and provide some much needed depth at that position. Florida State is the other school that showed initial interest after the announcement. And yes, he would be eligible right away.

Hey Hayes!
One of the top prospects in the state of Ohio got a call from Dayton Wednesday on the first day 2013 prospects could be called directly from college coaches. Toledo Whitmer forward Nigel Hayes has been pursued heavily since Archie Miller and Kevin Kuwik came to Dayton. They saw Hayes workout in the early evaluation period at a Whitmer open gym.

The 6-7, 210-pound Hayes told me he heard from Akron, Cincinnati, Dayton, Memphis, Ohio State, Toledo, West Virginia, and Wisconsin also. There's been some questions regarding his recruitment because he'll likely be able to decide on whether he wants to play football or basketball in college.

Houston traveling from NYC to Dayton
Wings Academy (NY) point guard Deonte Houston was originally a class of 2011 player, but reclassified to 2012. This past season, he averaged 14 points and six assists in being an All-City selection. He played with the New York Panthers AAU program, the former squad that Dayton assistant Allen Griffin ran with back in the day.

Houston has been hearing from Dayton, George Mason, Manhattan, Quinnipiac, Siena, and Western Kentucky. Hofstra was recruiting him when Coach Griffin was there and has continued the recruitment at Dayton. I spoke to Houston recently and he told me he's trying to get a date finalized for visiting Dayton in the next couple of weeks. That was the only school he mentioned that he wanted to visit during the month of June.

That does it for this edition! A firm reminder, that whatever is said in the War Room, needs to stay in the War Room. A welcome and a thank you to all the new subscribers and a continued thanks to all the loyal subscribers that just can't get enough of Dayton basketball. It's all of you that continue to make this place the most special place to talk Flyer Hoops!

The War Room #11 (6/8/2011)

Welcome to the 11th installment of The War Room for the off-season of 2011.

Here it is, the 11th edition of The War Room for the 2011 off-season:

Callsign: Maverick
Springboro center Maverick Morgan was on campus yesterday for an open gym. This comes a couple of days after he put together quite a dominant weekend at the State AAU tournament. He told me he's hearing from Dayton, Ohio, West Virginia, Wright State, and Xavier. His first offer came about a month ago from Wright State, and I could tell in his voice how excited he was about that first offer when he told me.

Might he be on the verge of getting another? He was invited back to Dayton next Thursday for an unofficial visit along with his parents. He told me his parents are real excited about Dayton and the possibility to play close to home. The 6-10 Morgan should start seeing more scholarship offers come his way in the middle of this month when the 2013 class can start receiving calls from coaches.

Another Dayton Devin?
We talked last week how Montour 2013 point guard Devin Wilson was supposed to take an unofficial to Dayton last week, but had to cancel because his teammates had to get back to Pittsburgh after they were eliminated from a tournament in Columbus. I talked with Wilson again last night and he told me that that visit has been rescheduled for this week.

Wilson will be on Dayton's campus this Friday morning for an unofficial visit. We've heard all along that the new UD staff felt really good about making a big impact with 2013 kids because they're on an even playing field, as far as recruitment goes, with other schools that are recruiting the same 2013 prospect. It seems like they really emphasizing 2013 before that mid-June date and will attack 2012 with visits towards the end of the month-- not told this, just a hunch based on the evidence laid out.

Bad Boy coming to town
Here's another scheduling update... I've learned that Dayton will host Florida International and former Detroit Piston guard-- FIU coach Isiah Thomas. The Panthers finished 11-19 last season, but are welcoming in two three-star recruits that they're hoping to get the program turned around with.

FIU returns two of their four double-figure scorers including top scorer DeJuan Wright (14.5 PPG, 46.9% 3-PT) and Eric Frederick (12.6 points). The Panthers are expected to be a lot better in Thomas' third year in the program.

Razor-back to the Midwest
Here's a name to keep an eye on for a 2011 scholarship. 6-8 sophomore forward Glenn Bryant just announced he is transferring from Arkansas. He's originally from Detroit, Michigan, and played at Oak Hill for his senior year. He was a Rivals150 kid out of high school, known for his length and athleticism. He averaged 4.1 points, 50.5% from the floor, 3.0 rebounds, and an impressive 51 blocks in 12.9 minutes per game.

He's wanting to get closer to his home in Michigan with his transfer, so the move to Dayton seems logical. Now I haven't heard anything on whether Dayton is pursuing for sure, but was told when it was first announced, it's likely that it'll be Tom Ostrom's call on whether UD pursues Bryant. I've got a couple of different sources on this one, so I'll reply to this thread if I hear anything new.

Big A
A small update on Alex Gavrilovic-- I spoke with him the other day via email. He's back in France, wrapping up his final exams on June 14th. While in France, he's been practicing with the French national team he played with a year ago. He told me he will likely be on campus on June 24th, the day before Team Camp begins. I'm hoping to be down there for that Saturday so it'll be a chance to meet him for the first time.

That does it for this edition! A firm reminder, that whatever is said in the War Room, needs to stay in the War Room. Thanks to the new subscribers we've welcomed in the last week, and hope you enjoy what you've been able to learn so far! The War Room #10 (6/1/2011)

Welcome to the 10th installment of The War Room for the off-season of 2011. As always, I'll begin this session with the ground rules for those that may be new. Everything that is reported in The War Room must stay in The War Room. Sometimes the info is sensitive enough that it simply doesn't need to be passed on beyond the doors of this message board thread.

2011 Done?
It sounds like the 2011 recruiting efforts are complete after I learned that Dayton will not likely pursue Brooklyn guard Davontay Grace any further. From what I'm told, the UD staff made some calls to check on him and the feedback wasn't exactly to their liking. It's been relayed to both his coach and him that there is no interest from their end, and he sounded a little bummed about the news.

So it appears Dayton will likely carry over two more scholarships for the 2012 recruiting class, giving them a total of six. While it appears to be done, there's still one name to keep an eye on if he becomes available. Trey Lewis, a 6-0 point guard from Garfield Heights, has already signed an NLI with Penn State, but is said to be waiting to hear who the next PSU coach will be. If he does decide to ask for his release from his NLI, Dayton's staff will likely throw their hat in the ring.

Bewley?… Bewley?
Archie Miller thought he had his complete basketball staff filled out, but is now in the market for a new Strength and Conditioning coach. Mike Bewley has left the program in the past couple of weeks and has taken his talents to Atlanta. Brian Gregory has hired Bewley to be the S&C coach at Georgia Tech.

Bewley came to Dayton prior to the 2005-2006 season and had worked at Georgia Southern previously. Some of his family lives in Georgia as well, so it was really an opportunity that was hard for him to turn down. I haven't heard any names for possible replacements, and not sure I will before the hire is announced.

Oh, Mr. Wilson!
Last week's Pittsburgh Post Gazette had an article on Montour 2013 point guard Devin Wilson. The article mentioned that he would be making an unofficial visit to Dayton in the near future. The 6-3 point guard was in Columbus this past weekend for an AAU event and was scheduled to take the visit to Dayton.

However, they were eliminated by All-Ohio Red and several of his teammates needed to get back to Pennsylvania so the visit was postponed. They're working on rescheduling and he told me it would be "very soon." Other schools involved include Akron, Duquesne, Penn State, and Temple. The Zips are the only school to offer him a scholarship to this point and are also the only visit he has taken to date. I'll have more on him in an article very soon.

Bottle of Canty
Bridgton Academy guard Kareem Canty is getting a lot of interest these days, including from the Atlantic 10. On Thursday, Canty will make his first unofficial visit when he travels to Cincinnati to take in the campus at Xavier. I asked someone if he would likely take a visit to Dayton this week while he is in Ohio, the answer was no. I was told that some AAU coaches don't like to double-up visits because they feel like it's disrespectful to both colleges involved.

With that being said, I've been told that he'll visit at the end of the month, on June 24th. Miami, Oklahoma, Providence, Seton Hall, and Texas are also in the picture. A person I talked to said Dayton was right there in the mix and it was a credit to the job that Allen Griffin is doing with his recruitment.

Not Hasselbeck's Seahawks
While it appears the George Mason series has ended, I'm hearing the Flyers have picked up another Colonial Athletic Association opponent for next season. I've learned that Dayton will likely host UNC-Wilmington next season in a one-way game, meaning there will not be a return trip the following season. The Seahawks haven't been to UD Arena since Oliver Purnell's last season as coach, when UNCW All-American Brett Blizzard was a senior.

UNC-Wilmington was just 13-18 last season, and finished in eighth place of CAA with a 7-11 mark. They return five of their eight-man rotation, but lost their leading scorer in Chad Tomko (17.6 ppg). The Seahawks have assembled a seven-man recruiting class for the fall that turned heads of analysts. UNCW is coached by former Tennessee coach Buzz Peterson.

That does it for this edition! A firm reminder, that whatever is said in the War Room, needs to stay in the War Room. Thanks to the new subscribers we've welcomed in the last week, and hope you enjoy what you've been able to learn so far! It's all of you that continue to make this place the most special place to talk Dayton basketball.

The War Room #9 (5/25/2011)

Welcome to the 9th installment of The War Room for the off-season of 2011.

Here it is, the 9th edition of The War Room for the 2011 off-season:

Getting Close
Dayton is still very much in the mix to land Towson transfer Isaiah Philmore. While he has three schools, including Delaware State, that he is choosing from, most feel with his criteria that it is likely a two-horse race between Dayton and Xavier for his services. Dayton has the ability to offer playing time right away with the loss of Chris Johnson after this season, which could be a big boost for the Flyers. However, Xavier lost out on Louisiana Tech transfer Olu Ashaolu, which makes Philmore an even bigger priority for them.

An article earlier this week said that Isaiah will likely make a decision by Memorial Day, which is Monday. I traded a couple of texts with him last night and he told me, "I will be making my decision in the next two days as long as I'm 100% certain." He said he really hasn't really had a formal sit-down with his inner-circle, but has had some talks and is getting close to feeling comfortable with a single school. It's just a matter of time before we all hear something for sure, but he's not even leaving the slightest clue of where he's leaning at the point.

Everybody Knows Raymond's
According to reports yesterday afternoon, St. Raymond's (NY) 6-5 small forward Nkereuwem Okoro had committed to Iowa State. Later last night, Okoro denied the fact that he indeed did commit, which is good for Dayton. Okoro is one of Allen Griffin's 2012 players that he is in on early after moving to Dayton.

Along with Iowa State and Dayton, Pitt, Providence, Rutgers, Seton Hall, and St. John's are considered players for his services. He has named Iowa State as his leader previously, but he's not quite ready to end his recruitment. If he doesn't give a commitment soon, Coach Griffin will likely try to get him to visit Dayton's campus sometime in June.

Simon Says
Former NC State forward Simon Harris has been brought in to be a Graduate Assistant and will make his way to Dayton in a couple of weeks. Harris didn't produce much statistically in college, but he was always a fan favorite of the Wolfpack because he gave everything he had every time he stepped on the floor. The 2009 NC State grad always saw himself as a coach and now he'll get his break into the profession.

The connection is Simon's father, Larry Harris. The former all-time leading scorer at Pitt was an assistant coach at NC State with Herb Sendek and Sidney Lowe. He was there during Archie Miller's playing days and was also there in the one season Archie was an assistant at NC State (2005-2006) before following Sendek to Arizona State. If this is the start of a coaching career like the one his father enjoyed, then Simon Harris is a terrific addition to the staff.

Big Ten Opponent?
This one isn't done and may not get done, but I've learned that Dayton is in talks with the University of Michigan about a home-and-home series beginning this season. The Wolverines are the ones that approached Dayton about the opportunity and it's said U of M is looking for a deal with an Atlantic 10 team for a February non-conference game in the middle of conference action. It would be the first game the Flyers have played against a Big Ten team since they went to Illinois and won two years ago on their way to the NIT Championship.

The other A-10 team believed to be in the mix is Richmond, where John Beilein used to coach. The Flyers are said to be excited about the opportunity because its another BCS school on the schedule, but also the fact it would mean Paul Williams would get a game against the Wolverines in Michigan for his senior year. It sounded like there was a good chance it would come to fruition, but has some work to get done.

Wright Stuff
There were a lot of questions being asked about Chris Wright after he was left off the list at the NBA Draft Combine. Keep in mind, this is a top 50 players that receive invites and he's a borderline top 50 guy right now. DraftExpress listed him as one of their top snubs, along with familar names Jacob Pullen, Damian Saunders, and Willie Reed. NBADraft.net currently has Wright being taken with the 57th pick by the Dallas Mavericks.

I was told last week that Wright has eight individual workouts scheduled with teams including Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Golden State, New Jersey, Portland, and Washington. They are also waiting to hear back from the Lakers, 76ers, and Bucks. The workout schedule begins with Golden State (5/31), Detroit (6/2), and Chicago (6/6) . I talked to a NBA pre-draft trainer a while ago and he told me he thought Chris Wright has a really good chance to be taken in the second round because he's a fringe guy to begin with, but his reputation is solid with a lot of teams in the league.

The War Room (5/18/2011)

Welcome to the 8th installment of The War Room for the off-season of 2011.

Here it is, the 7th edition of The War Room for the 2011 off-season:

Vee-Point Range
As we all know by now, Georgetown transfer Vee Sanford is on campus as the third official visit of the Archie Miller era. Vee went as far to tell me three weeks ago that he thinks (at least at that time) that it was a no-brainer that he'd likely end up at Dayton. He was scheduled to visit Marshall unofficially on his way back from school over the weekend, but told me yesterday that he didn't end up making the stop. From what I heard, it would likely be a courtesy visit to Huntington anyways.

I can tell you his parents came for the visit with him and today is the "get serious" part of it all. There's a feeling that he might pop the commitment on the coaching staff today, but he told me, "I don't know, to be honest" when I asked him if there might be a commitment taking place while he is there. I think he'll be a Dayton Flyer when it's all said and done, and I tend to believe, it will be real soon.

Down to three
I touched base with Isaiah Philmore on Tuesday night to get an update on his transfer situation. His original plan heading into this week was to take a trip to Delaware State and then get his list down to two schools. He made the trip on Tuesday during the day and told me afterward that his plan has changed. He said all three schools are neck-and-neck right now and he'll leave it at three and think about things. He said it's so close that he doesn't know when he'll make a decision and is just going to take some time and talk to the people close to him about what all three have to offer. He noted to me all three of the coaches are "players coaches" and that's what he is looking for.

A couple notes about the other two schools involved for Philmore. Rasheen Davis is the assistant from Xavier that is handling his recruitment, it wasn't Pat Kelsey. As far as his interest goes in the Delaware State Hornets, it involves personal connections. He played AAU basketball for Team Takeover with a guy at Delaware State, forward Tyshawn Bell. He also played with Dockery Walker (Brown University), the son of DSU assistant coach Keith Walker. I really don't know where Philmore ends up at this point, any of the three wouldn't surprise me and so I'm not going to give you any type of prediction on this one. From everything I've heard after the Dayton visit, the Flyers would be extremely happy to get a talent like him transferring into their program for the 2012-2013 season.

Long drive, but...
It's been really quiet on the Percy Gibson subject this week. I can tell you for sure that it was only his mom and him that made the trip to Ames. I was told that the drive was rough on mom, but she also said she would be okay with Percy going to Iowa State if that's really what he wanted to do. It very well could come down to his relationship with Cornell Mann if his mom is totally behind him, like it sounds.

The other thing that I was told was Percy probably wouldn't visit Dayton this week with Vee's visit and the dead period coming up on Thursday. The period lasts just eight days so if he is still torn, he could wait to take a visit to any of the other three schools afterward. Va Tech is coming hard and it was joked to me that they call him as he's brushing his teeth in the morning, getting ready for school. But it was also said don't be surprised if he knows all he needs to know to make a decision because he's been to both of his top two choices at this point. Time will tell with this one, but I think Iowa State and Dayton are as close as they've ever been for Percy.

Dr. Watson
Here's a somewhat new name for 2012, big man Devontae Watson of Lincoln Park in Pennsylvania. It was rumored a while back when Dayton called Chaquille Pratt (2011 wing), it was in hope to get a package deal started for Watson the following year. The 6-10 center averaged 17 points and 10 rebounds last season as a junior. He put together multiple triple-doubles this season, including blocked shots as the third category in those feats.

He's running with the King James Shooting Stars this summer and has reported offers from Cleveland State, Dayton, Duquesne, Robert Morris, St. Joseph's, and Temple. He'll likely come on campus sometime this summer for an unofficial with some of his AAU teammates.

"Kareem's in the Wash"
Sorry for the cheesy title, with that name, I had to make reference to one of my favorite movies-- Fletch. Anyways, I talked to Brooklyn native Kareem Canty recently as he's reclassified to 2012 at Bridgeton Academy. The 6-1 point guard was scheduled to take an unofficial visit to Providence late last week, but it didn't happen and his AAU coaches are working on rescheduling. He told me he is hearing from Dayton, Miami, Oklahoma, Seton Hall, Texas A&M, and Xavier. Coach Griffin was recruiting him to Hofstra when he was there and has picked up the recruitment since he got to Dayton. Kareem told me he has a great relationship with Coach Griffin and is "someone I can relate to."

Canty said he doesn't know much about the Flyers program at this point, but said he will take a visit to find out more. He said he will more than likely couple an unofficial to Xavier on a single trip to Ohio. He'd like to make a decision in the middle of the summer or maybe toward the end of the summer. Dayton has some catching up to do for Canty, but they're better off than a lot of people know for this elite 2012 talent.

A firm reminder, that whatever is said in the War Room, needs to stay in the War Room. That does it for this edition, I'd like to formally welcome all the new subscribers we've had since last week's War Room, and thank everyone for being a part of this community. The War Room #7 (5/12/2011)

Welcome to the 7th installment of The War Room for the off-season of 2011. As always, I'll begin this session with the ground rules for those that may be new. Everything that is reported in The War Room must stay in The War Room. Sometimes the info is sensitive enough that it simply doesn't need to be passed on beyond the doors of this message board thread.

The Big Equalizer
Percy Gibson is still said to be favoring a return to the University of Dayton. Talking with someone close to Percy, he may be down to three schools right now. I was told that he really likes Dayton, Iowa State, and Virginia Tech. The Hokies are really pushing for Gibson to make a visit prior to the dead period that begins on May 19th. At the same time, Archie Miller and Kevin Kuwik have really been pushing to get Percy back on campus before that dead period too.

The person I talked to indicated that it is very possible that Percy and his mom only make that trip before recommitting to Dayton. As I stated last week, the trip will also likely include 2013 guard Denzel Watts as well. The person said they think it will really assure Percy to go down and hang out with Devin Oliver and Paul Williams, two Michigan kids, and remember why he committed there in the first place. I'd say at this point, the Flyers are in good shape to land him (again).

Juste un plus de visite ?
Alex Gavrilovic has now went on two visits in the past week as he tries to wrap up his recruitment before heading back to his native France this weekend. No surprise, Alex is said to be leaning towards Dayton right now over Towson after he flew back to Bradenton, Florida, earlier this week. While it all looked like a given earlier in the week, there's still one large hurdle UD needs to overcome to bring in the talented forward.

I traded texts briefly with him yesterday and he had told me that he didn't know if he was going to visit Texas Tech or Southern Methodist, but did tell me that he had to call Coach Gillispie at Tech to see about taking a visit before he goes to France. Although I didn't hear it directly from Alex, sources were indicating late last night that he is supposed to visit Lubbock in the next 48 hours. He was adament last week that he wanted to take his visits before making a decision so it really doesn't surprise me that he'd squeeze in one more. Most likley, following that visit, Alex will make a decision prior to his departure.

Recruiting a wicked forward
The Dayton Flyers have opened up the recruitment of 6-7, 230-pound forward Georges Niang from The Tilton School in Methuen, Massachusetts. The 2012 prospect told me he already has scholarship offers from Alabama, Charlotte, Drexel, Iowa, Iowa State, Massachuetts, Miami, Providence, Rhode Island, Seton Hall, and Texas A&M.

He's a very skilled inside-outside power forward, but not overly athletic. Allen Griffin was recruiting him to Hofstra and has picked up the recruitment on him when he got to Dayton. Actually, the two spoke on the phone last night. He has also had the chance to talk with Archie Miller on the phone as well. The plans right now are for him to come to Dayton's campus for a visit in the next couple of months. He will most likely make a decision in August sometime, and is really intrigued with what the two Dayton coaches have told him about the program and it's direction.

Vee for visits
One minor note, traded a couple of texts yesterday with Vee Sanford, who is finishing up his final exams. He's going to Marshall this weekend on a visit and if nothing changes, that will be the only visit he takes outside of Dayton. Next week, he'll visit the Miami Valley as the last player on UD's campus before the dead period comes up.

He was thinking about visiting Boston College also, but unless something sparks up at the last minute, it probably won't happen. Dayton and Marshall are two schools not too far from his home in Kentucky, so those two probably make more sense anyway.

Home is where the heart is
Here's some fantastic news that I am hearing that will really excite the Flyer Faithful if it comes to fruition. I'm hearing there are talks with an opponent that would bring a certain former Flyer home in a couple of seasons. I've been told that Dayton is working on a home-and-home deal that will pit the Dayton Flyers against Anthony Grant's Alabama Crimson Tide. Grant played for the legendary Don Donoher from 1983-1987 coming up from Miami, Florida. In all the talks I've ever had with Coach Grant, he's always expressed his admiration for Coach Donoher and his alma mater.

If I understood it correctly, the Flyers would go to Tuscaloosa this season and then host the Tide at UD Arena in the 2012-2013 season. It would be the second SEC team on the schedule of course, with Ole Miss returning the second of their home-and-home series. Dayton's senior class is a perfect 3-0 against the SEC in their career, defeating Auburn in Chicago as freshmen, Ole Miss at Madison Square Garden in the NIT semifinals as sophomores, and Ole Miss in the big second half comeback last season in Oxford. I figured the sight of having Anthony Grant back in Dayton would really excite UD fans as we close this War Room.

A firm reminder, that whatever is said in the War Room, needs to stay in the War Room. That does it for this edition, I'd like to formally welcome all the new subscribers we've had since last week's War Room, and thank everyone for being a part of this community. The War Room #6 (5/4/2011)

Welcome to the 6th installment of The War Room for the off-season of 2011.

Here it is, the 6th edition of The War Room for the 2011 off-season:

Je suis ici, Dayton !
Today's the big day. Archie Miller and his coaching staff host Alexandre Gavrilovic for their first official visit at Dayton. Obviously, you've probably figured out by now, Alex has delayed his trip back to France that was originally scheduled for May 5th. He's rescheduled to fly back to France on May 13th and it's still believed he'll make his decision prior to his trip home. Following his official visit to Dayton, he'll take another official visit on Monday to Towson and then an unofficial visit to Southern Methodist. He may also try to squeeze in a visit to Texas Tech prior to his departure.

It's believed that Dayton is the leader at this point, but he wants to take those visits to compare the opportunities. Get this, the girls basketball player from France coming to Dayton next year is from the same hometown of about 400,000 people. Alex said he doesn't know her, but he has heard of her. Alex told me that in conversations, Arch has made it very clear that he wants him to be a Dayton Flyer. I think it's going to have to take a heck of a trip to one of those other schools to beat out Dayton. For Allen Griffin's first day on the job, he's coming to UD today specifically for this visit.

Rated PG
Percy Gibson's decision likely will come in the next couple of weeks. It's still believed that he may take a couple of visits and then visit Dayton one last time before deciding. At this point, Iowa State may be the only school that Percy knows he'll likely visit along with Dayton. I've been told that when he does visit Dayton, 2013 guard Denzel Watts will likely come with him to UD. The old staff was just about to offer the Flint Carman-Ainsworth point guard before BG left for Georgia Tech. The new staff has picked up the recruitment and has shown a lot of interest in Watts.

Another interesting tidbit I've learned this week is that Percy supposedly turned down Indiana when they tried to turn up the heat on him a little bit to get a commitment. One thing is for sure, I was told Sandy Gibson favors Dayton at this point and location is a big thing for Percy and her.

Close eye on Savage
Although Adrian Autry didn't last long on the job at Dayton, he did have a little impact. It's believed that he turned the rest of Coach Miller's staff onto Episcopal (Alexandria, Virginia) junior Kethan Savage. He is a reclassified junior (originally 2011 class) who just helped his team to the Virginia state semifinals, averaging 17.5 points and 5.0 assists a game. The 6-3 guard projects as a combo guard, although he played the role primarily of a scoring point guard this season.

In the small window of evaluation last month, Archie Miller flew out to Alexandria that Tuesday to watch a workout for Episcopal along with 25 other Division I coaches. Savage has seven offers right now (Duquesne, Fairfield, Iona, Loyola Marymount, Rhode Island, Towson, and Virginia Commonwealth). He's also hearing from several other schools that are evaluating him and will watch him compete with Team Takeover in July (Central Florida, Dayton, George Mason, George Washington, Iowa, Oklahoma, Penn State, Seton Hall, and Virginia). UVA coach Tony Bennett was also one of those 25 coaches in attendance and reportedly was blown away by Kethan during the workout. So much so, they invited him down last week for an unofficial visit. Savage's coach told me that it's possible they visit Dayton unofficially if they can work out a date good for both Dayton and his family and if not, Dayton is sitting in good shape to get one of the five official visits for the fall.

K.J. down the road
Another 2013 guard to keep an eye on is Cincinnati Summit Country Day's Kevin Johnson. Dayton has had conversations about him with his coach and Johnson could be the best player on a loaded 16U Ohio Basketball Club team. He averaged 15.3 points and 6.7 rebounds as a sophomore this past season. He gave me a list of Cincinnati, Davidson, Dayton, Illinois, Ohio, Seton Hall, St. Johnson's, Wake Forest, West Virginia, and Xavier. He'll visit Xavier today and at the end of the month he'll visit Davidson and Wake Forest on unofficials.

He said he would like to make a decision maybe going into his AAU season next year.

Former Flyers
A couple of former Flyer tidbits… Billy Schmidt is likely to end up in Atlanta after all. Billy has been trying to find positions elsewhere, but has finished as a runner-up at a couple positions. He knows that he can't let this drag on much longer and will likely take the job that Gregory has been leaving open for him this entire time. A source told me they feel like Gregory really needs someone he can trust for that last spot on his staff. An announcement may come sometime next week.

I also did some checking on Brandon Spearman and what he might be doing. I was told by someone fairly reliable not to be surprised if he ends up going to a Junior College next season. The person told me that he hadn't heard any specific schools mentioned, but said it'll likely be a JUCO in the Midwest.

That does it for this edition of the War Room. I'd like to formally welcome all the new subscribers we've had since the last week's War Room, and thank everyone for being a part of this community. It's all of you that continue to make this place the most special place to talk Dayton basketball. Hopefully this time next week, I'll be able to share some good news with you!

The War Room #5 (4/27/11)

Welcome to the 5th installment of The War Room for the off-season of 2011. As always, I'll begin this session with the ground rules for those that may be new.

Here it is, the 5th edition of The War Room for the 2011 off-season:

Percy, Percy, Percy
There's been a lot written about Percy Gibson in the last month, and from what I am told from someone I trust, most of it is not true. Gibson asked for his release simply to "test the waters" as it was put to me. I'm told his heart still lies with Dayton, as does his mother's. Since his release, he's received roughly 15 scholarship offers from schools from some major conferences-- Big Ten, Big XII, ACC. I would expect Iowa State, with Cornell Mann now on staff, to be one of the schools really pushing hard for Gibson's services. Only two or three of those offers is Percy taking seriously. I was told Kevin Kuwik has done a phenomenal job with Gibson's recruitment and that even Autry had an hour conversation with the Gibson's before he took the Syracuse job. From what I gather, they'll likely take one or two visits in the next couple of weeks and then plan on visiting Dayton one more time before deciding. I think Dayton will be right there at the end.

Je visite Dayton
Alex Gavrilovic continues to be a priority for the Dayton Flyers. The french IMG player that sat out this season took unofficial visits to Florida International and Florida Gulf Coast last weekend. His recruitment is winding down and he'll be on campus soon. Alex will take a visit to Dayton next Wednesday for an official visit, and that is the only one setup right now. From what I was told, Southern Methodist and Hawaii are other schools being carefully considered. Kansas and Texas Tech want him to visit, but I was told he likely won't be visiting those two schools with his short timetable. Remember, Alex is going back to France on May 5th, and he wanted to have his destination known by the time he travels home. I can tell you that IMG sent an international kid, Kyryl Natyazhko, to Arizona, and it was pointed out that they were very pleased with the way the Miller's took care of him. I was told that IMG might even have Kyryl talk to Alex before he makes his decision. Dayton appears to be in very good shape for Alex.

Vee is for Victory
Georgetown transfer Vee Sanford has talked with Archie Miller about the possibility of transferring to Dayton. The Lexington, Kentucky native was originally recruited by Brian Gregory's staff in high school before deciding to become a Hoya. Two years later, Sanford has a high level of interest again in the Flyers program, but this time it's led by Archie Miller. Vee told me that he is also hearing from South Carolina, Marshall, Xavier, and Mt. St. Mary's. Sanford didn't really get too much of an opportunity this past season, but when he did, he showed he could shoot it. He knocked down 60% of his three-point field goals and 52% overall. He said he'll likely make a decision in the next three weeks and is supposed to talk with Coach Miller over the next couple of days and hopes to setup a visit.

Junior is back
Just a brief note or two on Christian County and Kentucky's Mr. Basketball, Anthony Hickey Jr. I traded a couple texts last night with Anthony Hickey Sr. last night right after the two landed home from their trip to LSU. He played the conversation very close to the vest, saying that the trip "went well". He did enlighten me into the fact that they were going to talk things over last night and decide from there if they need to take anymore visits. He also has Butler, Dayton, South Carolina, and Western Kentucky on his list. I'm guessing we'll hear something this morning on the direction of his recruitment.

2013 made a priority
From what I am told, the 2013 class has been made a heavy priority in the first month of recruiting. It's this simple, the current Dayton staff is already a year behind on building relationships with kids in the 2012 class. June 15th is the first day that anyone is allowed to call the 2013 kids. Dayton checked in on a lot of the top 2013 forwards last week at their respective high schools for workouts. Some of the names I heard were Villa Angela-St. Joseph's Demonte Flannigan (6-6/215), Toledo Whitmer's Nigel Hayes (6-7/200), and Garfield Heights Tony Farmer (6-7/220). All three enjoyed terrific sophomore campaigns as Farmer averaged 17.7 points and 10 rebounds for 24-2 Garfield Heights, Demonte Flannigan averaged 13.7 points and 10.7 rebounds, while Nigel Hayes tallied 14.5 points and 7.7 rebounds a night. I'm told while they were up north, they also checked in on point guard Elijah Brown (6-2, 165), the son of former Cleveland Cavaliers coach Mike Brown. It seems as though the new staff is really making an effort to be a big-time player for some of the state's top soon-to-be juniors, not just the ones in the Dayton area.

That does it for this edition of the War Room. Again, we have quite a few new members to the board that we've added recently. I want to thank all of you for subscribing and formally welcome the new subscribers we've had since the last War Room. I echo the same sentiments that Pastor Tim has shared: it's the FlyerHoops community and your passion for the program that makes this place the most special place to talk Dayton basketball.

The War Room #4 (4/20/11)

Welcome to the 4th installment of The War Room for the off-season of 2011.

Here it is, the 4th edition of The War Room for the 2011 off-season:

Archie Miller has accumulated a lot of miles in the past week alone. Since last Thursday, Coach Miller has been to New York, Florida, Ohio, and Indiana. Three of the four locations were obviously recruiting trips with the one to Ohio being back in the office. Let's dive right in to what he's been up to for the last week.

Je m'appelle Alex
Coach Miller made a trip to Bradenton, Florida last week for IMG Academy 6-9, 230 lb. big man Alexandre Gavrilovic. Alex is a native of Strabourg, France, and originally signed a NLI to Providence for the 2010 season. He was ruled ineligible by the NCAA Clearinghouse after all his french credits didn't completely transfer over. He sat out this season and worked out at IMG and this will count as his transfer year and he'll be eligible at his college choice right away. He'll be considered an International transfer that will have four years to complete four years of eligibility.

His coach described him to me as a 4/5 on offense with the ability to guard three spots. Studying video of him showed he can play with his back to the basket against the smaller defenders and could shoot the three ball with consistency.

Schools that are on his list right now include Central Florida, Dayton, Duquesne, Kansas, Loyola (Chicago), Mississippi State, and Towson. He'll likely visit Dayton this weekend or early next week, and Coach Miller or Coach Kuwik was expected to visit him either yesterday or today with the hopes of finalizing a visit date. Gavrilovic scheduled to head back to France on May 5th for a month so he's wanting to make a decision prior to leaving. Alex was a member of the France U-20 National team that won Gold last year.

Dr. Baller, M.D.
While in New York, Miller visited Westchester Coummunity College wing Marcus Damas. As a freshman two years ago, the 6-7, 200 lb. Damas redshirted at Cowley College in Kansas. He transferred to Westchester where he averaged 15 points and 10 rebounds this season as a redshirt freshman. With the four-in-five rule, he'll now have three years to use three years of eligibility at the school he chooses to continue his career. He said he'd like to make a decision in the next three weeks.

He originally committed to the old coaching staff at Towson and there were reports early last week by multiple sites that cover JUCO recruiting that said he had recommitted to Pat Skerry and Towson. I talked with Damas last night and he in fact told me that is false, that he is open and looking at all options, but Towson is still one of the schools on his list. In fact, he told me he is scheduled to visit Towson today. He said he could be setting up a visit for Dayton for sometime next week, and didn't know if he'd make any more visits than those two. DePaul and Providence are the other two schools said to be involved with him.

Abell to go elsewhere?
So here we are a couple of weeks after Louisville Eastern's Remy Abell asked Bradley for his release from his NLI, and he is still waiting. I traded emails with his AAU coach Jeff Davis who let me know that was the case, despite their request for the release a while ago. He did clue me into the fact that a lot of schools are showing interest in the ways they are allowed to. And yes, that includes the new Dayton coaching staff. He didn't want to name schools with Abell still committed under a NLI, but said "A LOT of schools" are showing interest.

Geno Ford and Bradley were in Louisville on Tuesday to meet with Abell for the first time since the former Kent State coach got the job. Remy is reportedly going to talk things over with his family and then decide what his future holds.

Wizard of Osborne
On Monday, Coach Miller checked in on 2012 forward 6-8 Nick Osbourne out of Muncie Central in Indiana. Osborne averaged 16.6 points and 10.4 rebounds this past season as a junior. He told me he was impressed with Archie when he got to talk to him. If you'll recall, Osborne was recruited by the old Dayton staff and has been a guest at games at UD this past season so that should help the Flyers cause.

He's being recruited by a slew of schools -- Alabama, Ball State, Boston College, Butler, Cincinnati, Dayton, Fordham, IUPUI, Miami (OH), Northwestern, Northern Illinois, Stanford, Valparaiso, and Xavier. He's running with the Eric Gordon Central Stars this summer and likely will be a guest at Dayton's open gyms in June.

"Red" Rover
Miller was seen back in Dayton this past weekend, showing Adrian Autry around campus. Although we broke the story on Autry last Friday and said Bill Comar would be the DBO a week and a half ago, I'm told that the official announcement is hung up right now in the human resources department.

A source said that Coach Autry could be Archie's top assistant on the staff. That's a pretty big jump considering he has just one full year of experience as an assistant coach at Virginia Tech, but if anyone could do it, it's Autry. He was known as an intelligent point guard though and has already shown his ability to communicate and create strong relationships as a coach and mentor. His addition to the staff has already created quite a buzz in the coaching circles.

That does it for this edition of the War Room. Again, we have quite a few new members to the board that we've added recently. I want to thank all of you for subscribing and formally welcome the new subscribers we've had since the last War Room. It's all of you guys that make this place the most special place to talk Dayton basketball.

The War Room #2 (3/24/2011)

PLEASE NOTE: The original War Room was accidentally purged after it was not moved in time to the Archived Forum before it fell off the four page shelf. I'm trying to recreate it based on the information I had saved in my email to myself.

Welcome to the 2nd installment of The War Room for the off-season of 2011.

Here it is, the 2nd edition of The War Room for the 2011 off-season:

BG leaving?
I continue to get emails and hear rumors of Brian Gregory interviewing for other jobs. While I haven't seen or heard anything concrete, a couple have even went as far as saying there may be a contract drawn up ready to be signed. The one common theme in all the emails, no one knows what school. One email hinted at Georgia Tech, but you go to their message boards, they act as if they have no idea who Gregory is. BG's name has also surfaced on lists compiled for the Tennessee and Mizzou jobs. I admit that at first, I was rather surprised that his name would appear on the Mizzou list, but the more I thought about it, the less surprised I became. Being from Illinois, Missouri will need to recruit Chicago well. Plus, people said Mike Anderson used job interview against Missouri's athletic department often to get pay raises and that rubbed the Tiger brass the wrong way. Here's Brian Gregory that has turned down BCS job offers in the past, had an opportunity to get a pay raise last year when he was trying to be enticed from bigger schools and left it on the table, and likely wouldn't want to make another jump until Tom Izzo retires. It makes sense, and BG is rumored to be on a shortlist of maybe 4-5 candidates.

Kaspar the Friendly Ghost
Dayton has been actively recruiting point guards that will be eligible this fall for the two scholarships open for 2011. We brought you two names we've heard earlier in the week, and we've learned of one more on Brian Gregory's recruiting trip out west. I think the one thing that is prevalent in all the point guards on their radar right now is they're all guards that seem comfortable with their abilities. They know what they can do and what they don't do well. Very important after this season.

Findlay Prep's Kevin Kaspar is one the priority point guards on Dayton's board right now. Kaspar is known for being a strong defender and possessing a nice outside shot. He doesn't shoot much, but has been described as a very efficient shooter. Creighton, Dayton, Sam Houston State, Texas Christian, Utah State, and Western Kentucky have all offered scholarships. Kaspar said he will likely visit Utah State, WKU, and Dayton. Flyers head coach Brian Gregory stopped in Henderson, Nevada this week to check up on Kaspar.

Mr. Smith
While Brian Gregory was out West, he also made a stop at the College of Southern Idaho. The Golden Eagles had just taken home the NJCAA National title in Kansas. Darius Smith was a kid out of Chicago that Dayton recruited out of high school. He was seldom used his freshman year at UCONN before ending up in Twin Falls, Idaho. He hasn't been the best player on his team, statistically, but has been steady. Again, another kid that hangs his hat on the defensive end of the floor. He led the team with 111 steals, 41 more steals than the second highest amount of picks on the roster. I traded a couple of texts with Smith who let me know that he had a good conversation with BG the other day. He also said, "I feel good about things and got a very good vibe from coach." I think one comment that stood out about Smith was "He doesn't need to score to stand out." Smith led his conference in both assists and steals. He's also received interest from Chicago State, Detroit, Hawaii, Illinois State, Iowa, and Minnesota.

Willing and Abell
We've talked about some possibilities to fill the point guard spot, what about the spot vacated from the Brandon Spearman transfer? I'm hearing that the Dayton staff has already shown interest through back channels to Lousiville Eastern wing Remy Abell. The Flyers were on him prior to UD filling their two scholarships and he ended up signing with Bradley. Coach Les was fired from Bradley and it's left Abell's recruitment up in the air. I traded emails with his AAU coach, Jeff Davis, who told me that "a lot of schools" are showing interest with Abell. He also said they are waiting to hear who Bradley hires before they officially ask for his release from his signed National Letter of Intent. His size and skill will have the high major schools calling on him if, in fact, he does asked for his release.

That does it for this edition of the War Room. I want to thank all of you for subscribing and formally welcome any new subscribers we've had since the last War Room. It's you guys that make up this family and make this place the most special place to talk Dayton basketball.

The War Room #1 (3/17/2011)

Welcome to the 1st installment of The War Room for the off-season of 2011.

Here it is, the 1st edition of The War Room for the 2011 off-season:

Obviously, the two biggest topics surrounding the Dayton Flyers program right now is the future of their head coach Brian Gregory and their All-Rookie point guard Juwan Staten. I'll cover both topics in depth during this War Room, starting with the eighth year UD coach.

Bee-Gee's
I've heard Brian Gregory's name thrown around since early February with five jobs if they had become open-- two of those have in the past couple of weeks. Let me make this clear before moving on-- Dayton is committed to Brian Gregory and believes he is the guy to lead this program. With that being said, I was told that they may urge him to shake up his coaching staff a bit just to appease the fans.

Gregory loves Dayton, but the treatment from some of the fanbase, may have him jumping at another opportunity this time. From what I am told, he was seriously contemplating the move to Iowa last year and was upset when the Hawkeyes brass didn't want to wait until after the NIT run. Even after that, I was told he received a verbal offer from Oregon, but decided to return to Dayton. Not too long after, Dana Altman was offered the job for the Ducks.

The five jobs I've heard his name mentioned with are Georgia Tech, NC State, Tennessee, Minnesota, and Illinois. Obviously, the first two are open, but the last three are not-- at the moment. Some say Bruce Weber must win his NCAA First Round game to keep his job, but even so, I am not sure if Gregory would be a prime target. It's a Big Ten position and he's from Illinois, so it seems it could work. Bruce Pearl's job at Tennessee is said to be in serious jeopardy amid his well-documented NCAA troubles. Gregory runs a successful and clean program, which would be very important to the Vols if they were searching for a new coach. The fact they recruit the same type of player should ease the transition. Plus, Billy Schmidt was an assistant coach at UT before and has some bonds in the Athletic Department there. Lastly, if Tubby takes the Arkansas job (or any other for that matter) as some are speculating, the Minnesota job is an appealing one. Maybe not for the majority, but I am told that Gregory sees it as a diamond in the rough opportunity. From what I can tell, he would likely be up against Flip Saunders for the job if it comes open. Saunders, now the coach of John Wall and the Washington Wizards, was a former Gopher player in college. The fact he is coaching a talent like Wall may keep Saunders in the NBA ranks, leaving BG, with his Big Ten background, as good of a candidate as any. I've been told that Georgia Tech came away very impressed with Gregory last year in Puerto Rico. Wouldn't surprise me to hear Gregory's name on a short list for fifth year Athletic Directory Dan Radakovich. In his five year's as A.D. for the Yellow Jackets, Radakovich has not made a single hire of another BCS head coach. Many I've talked to think Georgia Tech will hire a head coach away from a mid-major program.

I'm not sure what I'd put the odds at that he ends up back on the Dayton bench for next season, but I think this spring, more than any other previous, he'll be thinking long and hard about these vacant positions.

Wan Gone-zalez?
Obviously, a lot is up in the air with Juwan Staten's status as a Dayton Flyer. While nobody is saying for sure if they expect him back or not, majority will tell you he's not playing his role in the system. I am told there were at least two meetings with his dad and the coaching staff this season. Billy Staten was said to be demanding a lot of things from the coaching staff, requesting that they run the same offense for Juwan that they ran for Brian Roberts when he was here. At this stage in his career, Staten isn't ready, nor does he have the skillset to have that type of offense centered around him. When you saw Wan pull-up for a jumper at the top of the key, more times than not, that was him breaking off out of their offensive set.

A lot of the divide and chemistry issues between this team is said to be a result of Juwan and his father. When things got a little better towards the end of the year, supposedly his mom got involved and made Juwan's dad take a step back. There's likely going to be a heart-to-heart with Juwan and Brian Gregory sometime soon, where they will come to a conclusion about his future.

Transfers
While the obvious pick to transfer is Ralph Hill, that's not the case-- at least from his point of view. He has told his high school coach that he likes where he is at and is excited about next season at Dayton. From UD's perspective, they always have end-of-year meetings and tell kids what they see their role in the program being. Whether Ralph fits in their plans remains to be seen. One person told me they thought if he really dedicated himself this summer, Ralph could become a good player with Chris Wright's minutes on the table and Hill's ability to stretch the floor.

I've heard Juwan and his father may have some influence over a couple of other players-- speculation would likely begin with his roommate Brandon Spearman. The two of them are very close, but I also know that Brandon likes the University of Dayton so time will tell. I think Brandon can be a great player with his ability to put the ball on the floor and shoot the rock. I've said this before, once he learns to stop and pop, the kid is going to be lethal. Too many charging calls on him as he got to the rim.

Obviously, Juwan is another one we've already discussed. I can tell you that the Staten's have reached out to at least one coach that recruited him in high school. I think whatever he decides, the Dayton Flyers will be on board with it-- even if it means he leaves the program. I think they would rather have him stay and make the commitment to adjust his game to fit within the system. He's not offensively gifted enough in all facets to have the system shaped around him. I can tell you that Dayton feels confident in Kevin Dillard's abilities, but would love to have the depth of those two at the point guard spot.

Pro Days
Chris Wright finished up his four-year college career on Tuesday, finishing with Devin Searcy as the winningest class in the school's history. He'll play professionally, but now he's trying to play himself onto an NBA roster. He was one of 64 seniors invited to next month's Portsmouth Invitational in Portsmouth, Virginia-- April 6-9. Every NBA General Manager will be there so he has an opportunity to impress a team there.

There's hope that with the early NIT loss, that sets him up to receive an invite to the NCAA Final Four dunk contest. I'm not quite sure when those invitations are extended, but Brian Roberts received one for the three-point contest after their loss to Ohio State in the NIT Quarterfinals so it'll be in the next couple of weeks, I'm sure. Would be nice for him to have his athleticism on showcase to an ESPN audience.

Closing
Lastly, Mr. Basketball in Michigan is announced next week, March 21st. I'd be very surprised if it didn't go to LaDontae Henton, the future Flyer.

That does it for this edition of the War Room. I want to thank all of you for subscribing and formally welcome any new subscribers we've had since the last War Room. It's you guys that make up this family and make this place the most special place to talk Dayton basketball. So Thank You! Oh, and Happy St. Patty's Day!

The War Room (05/20/2010)

Welcome to the 7th installment of The War Room for the off-season of 2010.

Here it is, the 7th edition of The War Room for the 2010 off-season:

KD's visit
Talked to some of my sources and talked to Kevin's dad briefly. Believe it or not, Big Kevin hadn't really talked to his son that much at that point last night when he and I talked. He was still at work and barely talked to Little Kevin on Tuesday night. He said Kevin was having fun hanging out with Josh Parker, but he wanted to let him enjoy himself on his visit and would talk to him when he returned to the Windy City. As it was at that point, he was definitely going to be taking his visit to Alabama.. but things could change.

First, got a couple emails on this... the reason for so much time between the Dayton visit and a Bama visit? Today starts a dead period and that lasts until the 28th. When the dead period ends, it's Memorial Day weekend and they didn't want him to visit then.

One person told me they thought he ultimately would choose Dayton, but wasn't sure if Kevin would wait until his original June 5th decision date. Kevin himself told me last week, "If I would have taken a visit to Dayton and really talked to BG instead of rushing into a decision to go to SIU, I probably would have ended up at Dayton."

Time will tell, but from everyone I talked to, things seemed to have gone extremely well. They told me he really fit in well with the guys and it was quite evident. The perimeter possibilities in two years of Kevin Dillard, Juwan Staten, Josh Parker, Paul Williams, Brandon Spearman, and Chris Johnson has a lot of the people I talked to very excited. I think at this point, with all I gathered, I'd be surprised if he didn't end up a Flyer and soon.

No visit in May for Mays
Apparently, Julius Mays visited Wright State last Wednesday and called up Dayton and wanted to take a visit. The Flyers talked to him and were interested in him, but quickly learned they wouldn't be able to meet his needs. Mays biggest concern apparently was playing time and Dayton felt like he could play at UD, but would be more of a role player instead of getting the type of PT he wanted.

He didn't visit Dayton on Sunday as his high school head coach Joe Luce thought he was going to and no, the Flyers never offered him a scholarship. Just as I thought, it might have been someone they circled back around to had things not worked out with Kevin Dillard. KD was/is/will be the UD focus for the 2010 scholarship. It was probably a better fit for Wright State and Mays to move forward together, and I think it will work out nicely for the both of them.

Way up there
Not a lot of coaches travel up to Northern Michigan to recruit basketball players because of the lack of competition. But as we saw, Dayton was one of the first schools on Dwaun Anderson and we know how good he is and how much he blew up when he got some exposure. One of their main rivals is St. Francis and they have a 6-9 sophomore named Sean Sheldon that has grown four inches in the past year! He already has MAC offers from Miami and Central Michigan and is being recruited by Dayton, Michigan, Michigan State, and Ohio State. He's a very cerebral post player with polished moves in the paint. Should start to see his recruiting expand after more teams become familiar with him.

Names to Remember
When Percy Gibson came to Dayton for a game last year, AAU coach Paul Carmona brought a couple of his talented young players coming up too. The four of them saw the Flyers play extremely well, posting a 20+ point victory over Massachusetts. The two players that were also in attendance with Carmona were Javontae Hawkins and Denzell Watts. Hawkins is a 6-5 sophomore wing that is athletic, long, and can shoot. Watts is a 6-0, 175-pound freshman that is already drawing comparisons to Mateen Cleaves.

Dayton is in on a couple good point guards in that class including the local big one - Jaaron Simmons from Alter. I know they're in good with Jaaron, but you know when a Mateen comparison is made that BG has to be intrigued.

That does it for this edition of the War Room. A big baseball weekend for the Flyers starts tonight (I'll have an article up shortly) and of course, I will let you know when I hear something or talk to Little Kevin.

And as always, thanks to all the new subscribers that signed up and the ones that have been loyal to making this the best site to talk Dayton basketball.

The War Room (5/14/2010)

Welcome to the 6th installment of The War Room for the off-season of 2010. As always, I'll begin this session with the ground rules for those that may be new. Everything that is reported in The War Room must stay in The War Room. Sometimes the info is sensitive enough that it simply doesn't need to be passed on beyond the doors of this message board thread.

KD-2010
With a scholarship still available for a member of 2010, the main focus right now appears to be Kevin Dillard of SIU. Dayton was the runner-up coming out of high school for the Illinois' Mr. Basketball from 2008, and he could find his way back to Dayton if things go well. Right now, I am hearing that he'll be in Dayton next Tuesday for his visit after he just wrapped up finals on Thursday in Carbondale.

Dillard last week said it himself that he was down to Boston College, Baylor, and Dayton and then Jeff Goodman came out with a top five that included both Dayton and Baylor the other day, but no Boston College. Not sure if things did change for him, or Goodman may be hearing old information. I am trying to confirm that and will reply to this thread if I hear anything further.

And now a name from each class starting with 2011...

Purrrrcy
I talked with Detroit Southeastern's Percy Gibson last night and the Flyers are among a dozen or so schools that have him high on their list and he has them high on his. He said he was going to start trimming his list to a top five or so and I asked him if Dayton would be on that list today and he said definitely. He's visited the school a couple times, he came with his coach and a couple teammates for a game towards the end of the regular season. He also told me that Dayton had stopped by a couple times since the season ended to watch him workout. He's running with Team Detroit and said he is putting up some big numbers on the AAU circuit. Early thinking, he said he'd probably make a decision after AAU ball.

Waving hi to Waverly
A 2012 prospect emerges from about an hour South of me in the form of 6-6 sophomore Jake Kretzer of Waverly High School. He's one of those kids that was always thought to be headed to college because of another sport (wide receiver in football), and suddenly he realizes he has a chance to be really special on the hardwood. He averaged 16.5 points this past season for the Tigers and has seen his hoops stock jump tremendously in the past 12 months.

Some schools have even shown interst for him to play both sports at the next level. He should see a lot of attention this summer if he continues to develop on the court as he's running with the All-Ohio Red 16U squad.

Young Bulldog
One of the hot names on Dayton's 2011 recruiting board is Jakarr Sampson from Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary's. When matched up against Sampson this season, Canton McKinley freshman center Mike Mills scored 11 points, nine rebounds, and four blocked shots in a win over St. V's. McKinley coach Greg Malone told me recently, "He has a real chance to be special."

Mills is running with Mike Duncan's Ohio Basketball Club this summer, so he will see some good competition. Along with Dayton, Coach Malone said Mike is getting early interest from Notre Dame, Ohio State, Detroit, Akron, and Kent State.

That does it for this edition of the War Room. Hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable weekend wherever you may be!

The War Room (05/07/10)

Welcome to the 5th installment of The War Room for the off-season of 2010. As always, I'll begin this session with the ground rules for those that may be new. Sometimes the info is sensitive enough that it simply doesn't need to be passed on beyond the doors of this message board thread.

UD in with stUD
A lot were asking me this week if Dayton has a legitimate chance at landing Jeremiah Davis for the 2011 class. He's a very political guy, says all the right things, and doesn't want to tip his hand. There was a rumor recently that he was close to committing to the Indiana Hoosiers, which he wrote off to me as just that- a rumor. A source that had heard the rumor told me that if he didn't commit to Indiana (this was a couple of weeks ago) in the next couple of days, it could be anyone's ballgame. When I asked Jeremiah if Indiana is his leader, he of course said he didn't have a leader. When I asked him if Dayton was anywhere close to the top, he responded, "Oh yea!" He told me that he watched them beat North Carolina and told me that's the style of play he wants to be in... "Yea, definitely, get up and down." While I still think it will be tough for UD to get him, they are doing a fine job in his recruitment and are better off than I think anyone gives them credit for.

Blowing Up
I mentioned recently about 2011 combo guard Phillip Green from Chicago Julian High School. Talking to some people this week, the overwhelming sentiment was, "This kid is blowing up!" More than once it was said to me. I was told in the last open period, both Dayton and Oklahoma State were in to watch him work out. He already has offers from UTEP and Bradley with possible bigger offers on the horizon. He's probably the most talented scorer on his AAU team and with the amount of long athletes on that squad, college coaches will be taking in a lot of their games this summer.

Could get interesting
Quality Education's Anthony Fields called me tonight and told me that he confirmed his unofficial visit in June when he is on his way back from North Carolina. I get the feeling that Dayton is pretty high on his list and he's the wild card. He's going to be taking the SAT test in June for the first time, and guess what? With that test, he becomes eligible to accept a Division I scholarship for the fall (2010). He told me that he reclassified to 2011 because he didn't want to go to a mid-major in the 2010 class. He then went on to say that anything could happen on his visit and that he would be open to the idea of accepting an offer in 2010 if they put one on the table. His play in the last year with QEA and D-One Sports has been nothing short of great. I've talked to scouts and even guys that put together mixtapes of guys and they all said they really like Ant. He's one that is gaining a lot of recruiting momentum and would be a nice coup if they could get to reclassify again to 2010-- doing so a little bit under the radar. We won't know for sure if they have that up their sleeve until probably after his visit next month.

K-D down to 3
Former Southern Illinois guard and former Illinois Mr. Basketball is narrowing things down. Last week, Alabama, Arkansas, Baylor, Butler, Boston College, Charleston, Cincinnati, Dayton, Nebraska, Penn State, Tulsa, and Xavier had all contacted Jim McLaughlin (high school coach). I was told recently that he has narrowed his list to a trio of schools that included Baylor, Boston College, and Dayton. I like the position the Flyers are in because they were runner-up for his services out of high school. Sources telling me he could visit Dayton in the next two to three weeks. He would be a tremendous addition after tallying 12.3 points and 5.0 assists for the Salukis as a sophomore. He will sit out 2010-2011, but have two years of eligibility remaining when he joins the playing rotation in the fall of 2011.

That does it for this edition of the War Room. For those Flyer mothers on the board, there are quite a few of you, Happy Mother's Day this weekend and the rest of you, don't forget to make Sunday a very special day for Mom!

The War Room (4/30/10)

Welcome to the 4th installment of The War Room for the off-season of 2010. As always, I'll begin this session with the ground rules for those that may be new. Two 2010 possibilties
There's been talk about taking Kevin Dillard as a D-1 transfer with the scholarship gained after Jesse Berry was released. I was assured this week that Dayton is exploring all three options: JUCO, Transfer, or high school senior.

Another possible transfer I am hearing is DePaul guard Jeremiah Kelly. The 6-1, 170-pound guard averaged 30 minutes a game for the Blue Demons this past season. He possessed a 2.5-to-1 A/TO ratio, while scoring six points a game. He was instrumental in an upset win over Northern Iowa, scoring 18 points and grabbing eight rebounds in 38 minutes. From what I hear, he doesn't feel too good about his new situation at DePaul and is beginning to throw out feelers about transferring.

I can tell you this much, if they do take on a transfer, the staff is looking for someone that has played and not someone that never saw the floor at another school. This is an example of a guy that certainly played, but struggled with consistency in the Big East.

Looking at the high school route, here's a guy that is on just about anyone's radar in Ohio that is looking for a guard to fill a scholarship for this fall. 2010 guard from Toledo Start Anthony Henderson. The first team All-Ohio selection averaged about 29 points a game this past year, 22 as a junior, but schools weren't sure he would qualify so there was a lot of wait-and-see situations. Now that it appears he'll be eligible in the fall, all the schools looking for late players are trying to get involved. Other schools include Miami (OH), Bowling Green, and Toledo.

Color of Money
Here's a new name that I had thrown at me this week... 2011 combo guard Phillip Green from Julian High School in Chicago. He plays during the summer for Mean Streets. I was told Dayton, UTEP, Bradley, and UIC are recruiting him with offers from Bradley and UTEP so far. As one coach told me, "He's probably going to have a lot more schools on him in the next couple of months." He averaged around 14 points a game this past season as a junior.

No 2010, but 2011
I exchanged some texts with Ge-lawn Guyn this week about his recruiting situation. He did indeed say that the Flyers were trying to get him to come in the fall, but he said he is definitely going to Brewster Academy to prep another yearl. He went a step further and said that Dayton said they would recruit him in both 2010 and 2011, so he'll remain on the radar for the next recruiting class. He was one of the top players in Kentucky this past season and originally committed to Charlotte.

Honigford Nearing a decision?
There was a lot of talk about why Dayton hadn't offered Sugarcreek big man Paul Honigford yet. Talking to his dad this week, I got the feeling that he was close to making a decision to go to Michigan State. "I think he is close" was said a couple of times.. "He's always liked the Big Ten, and I'm a Big Ten guy." "He wants to go somewhere where he can compete for a national championship because thats his ultimate goal." Putting all the pieces together, I am not sure what he is waiting on. His dad did tell me though that if he does go the mid-major to mid-major-plus route, it will likely be a school geographically close.

Red Shirt
So if you'll recall from my early conversation with Devin Oliver just when he got offered, there was talk between he and the staff that he may redshirt if Chris Wright decides to return for his senior year. I felt compelled to ask Devin on Thursday on the heels of Wright withdrawing his name from the draft, if that was still in the works. His answer was No. After a terrific senior year, I didn't think he should redshirt either, he's way too skilled and valuable. With that in mind, it is only the end of April, so a lot can happen between now and November.. but as of right now, it doesn't appear that DMO will redshirt.

The War Room (4/23/2010)

Welcome to the 3rd installment of The War Room for the off-season of 2010.

Here it is, the 3rd edition of The War Room for the 2010 off-season:

Big Mac
Trey McDonald was a guy that had a great summer before his junior year. He drew an offer from Dayton and Iowa very early in the recruiting process. He had a somewhat disappointing junior season, failing to average double-figures in scoring. His coach said he thinks Trey struggled being in the spotlight and receiving so much attention nationally in recruiting, that he was trying too hard. Dayton has been on him from very early on, and continue to pursue. In fact, Trey told me that Brian Gregory was scheduled to stop by Battle Creek Central on Wednesday to see him workout.

Fed-Ex Package
There's no secret what team that someone from the Dayton staff will always be watching this summer. With so many targets on the Michigan Mustangs for 2011, UD's attendance is almost as sure a thing as Sam Bradford was with the #1 pick in Thursday's NFL Draft. On Monday afternoon, I got a text message from Lansing Eastern's LaDontae Henton. The message read, "I just wanted to let you know that me and trey are probably going to package." If it wasn't obvious, LaDontae meant that he and McDonald wanted to play college basketball at the same school together. Dayton, Central Michigan, Utah, and Penn State are the schools that are recruiting both players at this time. Speaking to some of my sources, it's likely not going to be possible for Dayton to take both players in the 2011 class. It sounded as if the Flyers are for sure going to take a guard for the fall of next year, meaning that if either of these two guys committed, it's likely the other's scholarship offer would no longer be on the table.

One more time
If you thought Dayton was out of the woods for keeping Brian Gregory for next season, hold you breath one last time. There's been rumors circulating that Oregon's coaching search now includes Notre Dame's Mike Brey. What does this have to do with Brian Gregory? If you'll recall from one of my early War Room's in the BG era, Notre Dame was one of his original out clauses on his contract. ND is a Catholic school, Gregory is a strong Catholic... It's in South Bend near Chicago, and BG is from the Windy City.

I can tell you that there were some people in the athletic department nervous at mid-season when Notre Dame was struggling that Brey would be fired and replaced by the Dayton head coach. Brey saved his job by winning six straight to end the regular season. Now with Brey rumors leaving for Niketown, this possible scenario creeps back in the picture. As one person put it to me, Notre Dame might be the only stop for BG between Dayton and Michigan State. Luckily for the Flyers, the latest rumor is former Portland Trailblazer Terry Porter might be the next Ducks coach. So I don't think at this point, UD fans have too much to worry about, but the Notre Dame job is one position you should keep a pulse on going forward.

Crittle me this, Crittle me that
As Oregon continues to search for their next coach, current Oregon players are trying to find their new school. Former Hales Franciscan forward Josh Crittle was recruited hard by the Dayton staff while he was in high school and was offered a scholarship to UD as a prep player. He ultimately picked Oregon, but made it official on Thursday that he is transferring out of the Ducks program. One person told me there has been a feeler thrown out from UD to see if he has any interest. That move would seem to be a just-in-case situation where Chris Wright decides to keep his name in the draft, giving UD another scholarship to recruit with. Crittle will sit out next season and have two years of eligibility remaining in the fall of 2012 at whatever school he ends up at.

What's the Wright decision?
Not a big update on Chris, but I did speak to some people about his draft status. From what I have heard, the initial feedback received would suggest that he will be back for his senior season. However, that was feedback before he got to do individual workouts for teams. That, as one scout put it to me, is the time where Chris Wright could play himself into being a late first round to an early second round selection.

To me, I think it would be easier for Chris to play himself into an NBA contract from college than it would be from the D-League or Europe. Whatever decision he makes though, Dayton fans should be behind him. He's been nothing but a great representative of the University you all love and deserves support from the people that cheered him on for the three years he has been here. He's always worn Dayton across his chest, and his heart on his sleeve.

The War Room (4/16/2010)

Welcome to the 2nd installment of The War Room for the off-season of 2010. As always, I'll begin this session with the ground rules for those that may be new. Everything that is reported in The War Room must stay in The War Room. Sometimes the info is sensitive enough that it simply doesn't need to be passed on beyond the doors of this message board thread.

Trey for Trice
A couple things didn't happen last week like they had planned. Coach Trice didn't get out of work until late, so they weren't able to make it to Dayton's campus for last Friday's celebration. They were hoping to get to Butler's campus over the weekend as well, but were unable to. He said he did get to talk to Brad Stevens on the phone last Friday and they were hoping to get together sometime this week. They'll be in Pittsburgh this weekend for AAU ball, so they won't be able to this weekend so it would have had to have been yesterday or today -- and I hadn't heard anything yet.

Coach Trice talked about the disadvantage that Ohio puts their high schools in compared to the state of Indiana. Ohio schools are not allowed to get together and work out for a month after their season is completed, while Indiana has no such rule. He said some guys in Indiana have already been working out for coaches.

He also said that they'll be making a visit to Ohio University this summer (they took an unofficial there last year already). For some reason, I get the feeling that the NCAA win over Georgetown has done a lot for the Bobcats chances with Trice.

MC on the Mic
Speaking of working out, it seems that Michigan is really anxious to see Markus Crider work out. Coach Trice said the Wolverines have been showing extreme interest in landing Crider, coming to the last couple of games this season, and they are one of two Big Ten schools to extend him a scholarship offer. Although I get the feeling that Dayton isn't one of his top schools, Coach Trice and Markus both chalk it up to Crider just being familiar and knowing the situation there -- probably more so than anywhere else. Markus text me the other day that "all schools are in the pictures still."

Travis Trice Sr. said its a tremendous opportunity for him at Dayton and Crider knows that. It's funny what Markus is looking for in a college: an opportunity to develop for the next level, at a good program that will allow him to play on the perimeter. Sound familiar? Yea, it's because it sounds exactly like the guy he would replace coming out of high school -- Chris Wright. Dayton, DePaul, Wisconsin, and Michigan are his biggest offers to date for Markus with Notre Dame looming.

Act now before he's Dwaun!
When the Andersons spoke to Jon Borovich last Thursday, Ron told me the conversation was more personal than getting down to business about his recruiting. The one thing he did say that came up specifically about his recruitment was Borovich asked if they had a timetable in mind. At one time, Ron even threw out next April as a possibility which really surprised me, but I don't think it will drag out that long. As I stated in my article, he said that Oakland, Central Michigan, and Utah remain the only scholarship offers for his nephew. I personally think if they had told Borovich they would like to get this over before July that the staff may have met earlier this week and talked about the possibilities of offering Anderson.

He said they will be playing in a couple Adidas events in mid-Summer in Ohio, the Take 5ive and the Ohio Jam in back-to-back weeks. The Jam is actually in Dayton, where he said they would try to make a trip to UD's campus.

The Firm
Last week's War Room spoke about the contact with Jalen Steele, the former Dayton recruit who has since been released from his Letter-of-Intent from Auburn. Jody Demling released something on Thursday on his Twitter that said the Flyers were among a few schools who've been in contact with former Charlotte commitment Ge'lawn Guyn recently -- a guy they recruited before his initial commitment. Either of those two players would be solid additions to the 2010 recruiting class if a ship opens up. Here's a third to keep an eye on as well: Iowa de-commitment Ben Brust of Mundelein, Illinois. Sources have told me there has been some contact between the Dayton staff and his AAU coach Mike Weinstein. The Flyers showed some interest in Brust before he commited to Iowa last July. The kid can really shoot it. If they need to land someone else in 2010, any of the three from the Guyn, Brust, & Steele firm would be suffice.

Berry Good News, or at least better
Okay, so here's the deal. I found out about Jesse Berry's problems early last week and mentioned in the War Room that "I'm guessing we'll be hearing something very soon on this matter." When I said that, I had already spoke to the local sports editor Jim Stafford, who informed me that Jesse's arrest would appear in Sunday's Police Blotter. While I sat on the story, I did some homework and talked to several different people, ranging from media members, lawyers, cops, and even coaches on the matter. Here's the thing, I also knew that this was only half the problem. The other half was that he might be in jeopardy of not qualifying. I received what was deemed to be good news on Friday as I was leaving work, a JUCO coach who had been recruiting Jesse all season in case he didn't qualify, said that it appears that there will be no charges filed and he'll probably make the grade. As it was quoted to me, "The kid has nine lives." He's already spent a couple of those lives, and that's why BG wants to get him on campus as soon as he graduates.

That does it for this edition of the War Room. Thanks to all the new subscribers that signed up and the ones that have been loyal to making this the best site to talk Dayton basketball.

Question for everyone
I asked a question on Twitter yesterday and was curious how many of you own an iPhone as I was thinking about making a Dayton Flyers app. Reply or send me an email (matt@flyerhoops.net) if you do own one. Thanks!

The War Room (4/8/2010)

Welcome to the 1st installment of The War Room for the off-season of 2010.

Here it is, the 1st edition of The War Room for the 2010 off-season:

Jalen "The Real Deal" Steele
No, you're not reading a War Room from last year.. Jalen Steele is really back in the Dayton news. I've been told that Dayton is actively recruiting Jalen again after he asked for his release from Auburn after the coaching change. I spoke to his Uncle last night and verified the Dayton staff has shown interest, but there hasn't been serious discussions yet because Auburn hasn't faxed over his release yet. He hopes to have that either today or tomorrow.

The schools that are showing interest now are Florida, Georgia, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, La Salle, Wright State, Kennesaw State, and Dayton.

With the coaching turnover, he said they know there are a lot of other kids that are in the same situation, so they are probably going to be wrapping this up in the next 3-4 weeks. They're going to cut it down to three or four schools, take some visits and talk with some coaches, and then go from there. I can tell you that Dayton will be in those list of four schools.

Asking where the scholarship comes from? Most of the time it means either there is going to be a transfer out, a recruit might not be eligible in the fall, or UD would take the Chris Wright scholarship if he remains in the draft. I'm guessing we'll be hearing something very soon on this matter.

Ja-mie... Ja-mie Crockett
Remember a while back when we heard about a commitment from false reporting in the Chicago Sun Times? I told you that it wasn't true, and I'm here today to give you the story. So the night that Brandon Spearman played was also the night of the slam dunk contest, which Crete Monee's Jamie Crockett won. Before taking flight, a reporter asked Crockett where he was going to school. Crockett said that Dayton has been recruiting him the hardest, he likes them, so he'll probably end up there. Next thing you know, the Public Address is introducing Jamie Crockett as a Dayton commitment!

From talking to some people, he really, really likes Dayton a lot. By the sounds of it, if Dayton does offer him, he'll likely jump on it right away. And he has had that feeling about UD for quite a whille, from what I gather.

Jakaar cologne
I think one of the hot names you'll hear Dayton fighting tooth and nail for this summer is Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary's Jakaar Sampson. He's rumored to have Cincinnati, Xavier, and Dayton at the top of his list right now. I know Coach Joyce likes the job that BG and the staff did with Marcus and would not be opposed to sending another kid to Dayton.

Here's the situation you need to keep an eye on. Xavier's associate head coach Pat Kelsey has been mentioned for the head coaching jobs at both Charlotte and Wake Forest. He was the main guy recruiting Sampson, so I think if he leaves Xavier, it could have an affect on where XU stands with him.

Once, Dose, Trice
To me, it sounds like the Trice family is comfortable with the situation at Dayton. They've been to a lot of games and have talked to the Dayton coaches on numerous occasions. I think the trip to Butler this weekend is to figure out where they stand with the Bulldogs.

There was a rumor of a possible decision coming soon from Trice, but the father said it wasn't true. I honestly don't think it will drag on much longer, but heres what the elder Trice said, "It really depends on his comfort level. It could be something as simple as the next couple of weeks or if there's something where he's not comfortable with what he sees, it could go on through the summer."

Also, someone asked yesterday about his strength.. I can tell you that his entire focus at the moment is on his body and he is working out with the football team to try and put some meat and muscle on those bones.

That does it for this edition of the War Room. Thanks to all you great subscribers, thanks and welcome to the new subscribers that have jumped on board recently, and those that I got to meet in New York City. It was a great event and it's always great to put faces with message board monikers. The Flyers baseball team is home this weekend against George Washington if you're looking for something to do. Since Geno Auriemma talked to the guys, they've won four of five and swept Temple... so come out and cheer the guys on!
