Welcome to the 3rd installment of The War Room for 2021! As always, I'll begin this session with the ground rules for those that may be new. Everything that is reported in The War Room must stay in The War Room. Sometimes the info is sensitive enough that it simply doesn't need to be passed on beyond the doors of this message board thread.
This is a special feature for our subscribers only. The reason why it is posted on the premium board is because that's the only way to ensure that the info stays exclusive to Dayton Flyer fans. Thanks for your cooperation.
Without further ado, here it is.... The 3rd edition of the War Room for 2021!
GOOD TO BE OUT AGAIN
It was so good to hear so much about college coaches being back in attendance at events, making live evaluations of prospects across the country. Dayton doesn’t currently have a scholarship available for 2022 based on the scholarship chart, but with the landscape in college basketball, it’s almost a guarantee that there will be at least one.
From what I’ve been able to gather, the Flyers are very open-minded for 2022 and are not quite to the prioritizing stage with their recruiting board. They’d like to get their eyes on as many prospects as they possibly can before whittling down their focus.
I do believe that they are going to be putting an emphasis on wings that can shoot the basketball. The Flyers graduated two of their top three perimeter shooting in 2021 and really put an emphasis on their front court for the 2021-2022 roster.
Anthony Grant was said to be in a couple of locations, starting out in Atlanta on Friday with Darren Hertz. He then flew to Philadelphia to meet up with Ricardo Greer at the Philly Live event in Pennsylvania. James Kane started out at the Michigan event on Saturday and then made the drive over to Illinois on Sunday. I’d expect they may start honing in on a few prospects maybe as soon as this weekend, but if not, after this second weekend of evaluation.
2023s
While I was in Kentucky last week, 2023 prospects began to be contacted by college coaches across the country. The Flyers have already contacted some of the top prospects in the Rivals150.
Here’s a consolidated list of what has been reported on social media so far about who has been contacted by Dayton. Gabe Cupps, Lawrent Rice, Kanaan Carlyle, Isaiah Collier, Rayvon Griffith, Dylan James, James Johns Jr., Taylor Bol Bowen, Taison Chatman, CJ O’Hara, Gavin Griffiths, and Khali Horton.
Now that I am back, I am going to do some poking around and see if I can’t get a few more names added to the list. I will reply to this thread with those that I find out to keep them all together.
The 2023 class is very talented in the Midwest. Ohio has three prospects in the Top 100, Indiana has five, Michigan has one, and Illinois has three. Dayton continues their Southern coverage in Georgia and Florida, up in the Northeast as well, and they’re developing some relationships in the Midwest that will only make them a greater recruiting threat.
CUPPS
Speaking of 2023’s, it was expected that Centerville point guard Gabe Cupps was going to make an unofficial visit to Dayton a week ago. Something came up on Dayton’s end, however, and I was told they had to reschedule.
It was expected that the visit would still take place by the end of June. The following day, Cupps tweeted out a thank you for the visit and offer to Ohio State. I was quite honestly surprised that he landed an offer from Ohio State at this point in time.
Since contact period opened for 2023s, Cupps has picked up more offers from Brown, College of Charleston, and Miami (OH). I would expect the Flyers to be watching him closely during evaluation and then possibly offer on a visit if they think he’d be a fit in their program.
I think Dayton has done pretty well nationally when bringing in point guards in the last 10 years or so. I think they have two more good ones that will be freshmen this season. Sometimes, there’s too much pressure put on the local college to bring in certain talent only because its local. If Anthony Grant and Darren Hertz think he’s a great fit for their system and just as good as anyone else they might be eyeing for 2023, then go get him. If they evaluate and think they can do better, than trust their opinion. I don’t know how this whole thing is going to play out with Cupps, but Grant can sure land talent.
LUUKKEE
There’s been a lot of questions around Dayton transfer Luke Frazier and where he was going to end up. From what I’ve been told, he’s going to be taking off the 2021-2022 season and focus on getting himself right.
He faced a lot of adversity in his first year at Dayton. Along with the obvious appendectomy, he had personal off-the-court issues, and COVID protocol issues. On top of that, his work ethic outside of practice was questioned as well at least a couple of times to me. Everything just seemed to spiral out of control on him and Frazier had no other choice but to announce he was leaving Dayton.
He got some serious interest from Ohio University and the Bobcats really wanted him until they received his transcripts from Dayton. Frazier did not have the grades to get him into Athens to be eligible this season.
Frazier is going to work out and play in pickup games near Lake Catholic supposedly and possibly taken some classes locally to improve his grades. If and when he returns to college basketball, it very well could be at a JUCO or a Non-Division I school. I’m sympathetic because he’s such a young kid and had so much not go his way this year, but I’m always reminded that sometimes you just have to keep swimming or you’ll drown. Hopefully, he has some floaty’s on right now as he gets his mind and focus right and he’s able to start swimming again very soon.
