Welcome to the 9th installment of The War Room for 2018. As always, I'll begin this session with the ground rules for those that may be new. Everything that is reported in The War Room must stay in The War Room. Sometimes the info is sensitive enough that it simply doesn't need to be passed on beyond the doors of this message board thread.

This is a special feature for our subscribers only. The reason why it is posted on the premium board is because that's the only way to ensure that the info stays exclusive to Dayton Flyer fans. Thanks for your cooperation.

Without further ado, here it is.... The 9th edition of the War Room for 2019!

BUILDING BRIDGES

A hot topic on social over the weekend that made its way to the Red and Blue Forum was a tweet made by 6-7, 180-pound small forward Jalen Bridges from Fairmont, West Virginia. Following WVU’s season-opening loss at home to Buffalo, Bridges posted a tweet that reverberated across Morgantown.

“WVU basketball is a prime example of how people LOVE you when you up but as soon as you mess up everybody wants nothing to do with you.”

He offered this to FlyerHoops, “It’s just as a recruit, it’s not cool seeing the fan base calling the team a disgrace, terrible, etc.” As you can see, that didn’t seem to impress Bridges, but what did impress him was his visit to UD during the summer (https://dayton.rivals.com/news/target-offered-during-amazing-visit).

Now, Dayton will have another opportunity to impress him even more, both on the court and off. Bridges will make an official visit the weekend of November 30th and be in attendance for the Flyers showdown with 17th ranked Mississippi State. This could be a huge opportunity to strike while the iron is hot.

GETTING CLOSE

Last Saturday’s game had one recruit in attendance for the beatdown of Coppin State. St. Edward 2020 shooting guard Grant Huffman was there with him and his parents sitting behind the UD bench.

Huffman plays in the same AAU organization as Dwayne Cohill—Ohio Basketball Club. He averaged around 13 points per game last high school season as a sophomore. Following the visit, he told FlyerHoops that the visit went well and that he really liked it.

According to a source, the Flyers really like what he brings to the table. Smart, High IQ, and a winner. A lot of the same stuff that I heard about Robbie Beran is what they are saying about Huffman. The family spent some time talking with Coach Solomon after the game and they loved UD Arena and the student section.

He has offers on the table currently from Duquesne, Miami (OH), Toledo, and Xavier. While no offer was extended to Huffman during the visit, it sounds as if the Flyers are close to offering. He’s also hearing from Davidson, Notre Dame, and Princeton.

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS

The Flyers will take on Purdue Fort Wayne on Friday night in their last tuneup before hitting the Bahamas. Their opponent was just blasted by Ohio State last weekend so this should be another opportunity to entertain some recruits with some solid ball movement, athleticism, and hopefully continue to improve on the defensive end.

A pair of 2020’s are expected to be in attendance with the ball is tipped at 7:00 p.m. Jackson Ames from West Claremont and Lake Cathlolic’s Luke Frazier will be sitting behind the Dayton bench.

Ames is a 6-11, 240-pound center near Cincinnati. He currently holds two offers to date, one from Toledo and the other from Miami (OH). He always looks like a man amongst boys downlow with his ability to clean up missed shots around the basket and swatting shots from smaller guys that dare take it into the paint against him.

Luke Frazier is a 6-3 guard with offers from Bowling Green, Northern Kentucky, Ohio, Wright State, and Youngstown State. The lefty has a smooth-looking shot from the outside and a good handle. He also runs with OBC. This visit is probably more exploratory for the two, but time will tell if these two can play their way into Plan A type recruits for the Flyers.

EXEMPT TOURNAMENTS

Lastly, some administrative additions. Back in a War Room in 2016, we accurately reported the exempt tournaments that Dayton would be participating in through next year. The Flyers are headed back to Maui for the first time since 2013.

The field for Maui is loaded with BYU, Georgia, Kansas, Michigan State, UCLA, Virginia Tech, and host Chaminade all competing. The Flyers have never finished lower than third in the tournament including against a similarly loaded field in 2000 when they beat Maryland and when they won it in 2003 against a watered down field.

Tentatively, the Flyers are supposed to be a part of the Puerto Rico Tip-off next season that has been played in Myrtle Beach the past couple of seasons after the devastation there. The following year, the Flyers are expected to play in the Orlando Invitational at Disney World and then back to the Battle 4 Atlantis in 2022.

It’s still very early, but that is the rumors as of right now for the turkey events. Dayton is trending upward right now and should be able to compete in all of these fields over the few others.

CLOSING

That does it for this edition of the War Room! The excitement is building around the current group as you can see them improving from game-to-game. Next week will be a nice barometer for where they are. A formal welcome and thank you to the new subscribers, and as always thank you to all of you long-time, loyal subscribers! You guys are the reason this is the best place to talk Dayton hoops all year round! Until next time, WE ARE…..
