I have marked this day on the calendar. It is the first day of second semester at Dayton.
I would hope all of the players and coaches are vaccinated at that time (no political statement) and they are able to practice in the gym. This group of players need time to together to get their rhythm.
There are only two players on this squad that were in a Dayton uniform for the Maui tournament - Cohill and Sissoko. So in essence this squad basically brand new.
I never want to see Coach Grant bring his squad out of the locker room to doing offensive set walkthroughs ever again.
I have written out the current roster. I can see an experienced staring five with a super talented sub at the position. This squad is deep. Raw but talented.
So I am good with staying pat with this group. No need for another transfer or recruit, since it would come at the expense of this current roster.
As much as I would like the roster to be considered set right now, I would hope the coaching staff is set as well. With all of the head coach hirings this spring, those head coaches will be looking for assistants to fill their staffs. These dominoes (assistant hires) fall much slower. Probably much slower as new staffs can go “on the road” until the NCAA opens the restrictions of the recruiting calendar.
Matt has written that Dayton is scheduled to play in this fall’s Orlando Invitational. I viewed this like a college football team thinks about their upcoming season. Dayton needs to have the Orlando bracket posted in the practice gym and weight room. This needs to be the motivation for every summer lift, pick up game and skill development session.
